One last post Tonight.. SPAM..
-
Sorry if it seems like I have filled the board with messages tonight. It is the weekend and things are slow for some ;) I was thinging of yet another method to block out spam. It is close to a challenge and response, but not fully. My idea is to have a white list (the foundation of most anti-spam systems) which allows all email to come in if they are on the list. This will take care for all your email newletters and friends. But then you still need a way to allow people you may not even know to email you and not be treated as spam. Well, how about simply requiring them to have a prefix in their subject line of a few letters or lead the message body with a specific line of text. You could post the instructions on your web site next to your email so that people visiting will know how to reach you. When a new message is received it would check the From field against your white list and let message through that match on the sender. If not in the white list it will look for the specified subject line key you required. If it is there, it would add them to your white list and allow the message through. If it is not there it will automatically reply saying the you have a spam blocking system and that if they which to get their email to you they must prefix the subject line with the given letters. This will eliminate most automated systems and will one be a hassle for the person trying to reach you on their first attempt. Sound like a good Thunderbird extention if only I had the time :) Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com - Now with "Recommendation" postings www.MyQuickPoll.com - Now with Recent Poll List

But what a pain in the neck it is! I use Spamihilator and I must say it does a very good job. I barely get spam anymore (it blocks over 150 per day!). I can live with 0-2 spam per day. My 2 cents. Carl
It's not the spam getting through that is the problem with filters, it is the false positives that is the problem. Recently I took the filtering from SpamCop of my mail server since they happen to block too many legit IPs just because someone reported a subscribed service as spam. It is better to deal with a few hundred spams than miss email. Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com - Now with "Recommendation" postings www.MyQuickPoll.com - Now with Recent Poll List

If the spam robots that scan websites looking for e-mail addresses are aware of the authentication, then they can gather the info as well - unless the info is a graphic (similar to what several whois services use) Steve

Well, they could only gather it if everyone used exactly the same format to tell people to prefix the subject line. Of course, you could also say to include "some text" as the first line of the body or other keys that you can easily filter the messages. The primary point it to have driven by a white list and instead of trying to identify the spam, have it identify the legit mail coming in. Once a person has followed the method you described, they would be added to the white list unless you removed them. The key that you are use (and maybe even the field you are using it in) could be changed at different times if you start to see spam coming through. I guess, the focus is on identifing good mail and assuming the rest is spam, and instead of simply deleting it, send back an automated message saying it has been indentified as spam and give them instructions to pass the message if it is a mistake. Simple, effective. Easy to understand. As good as a receptionist filtering calls. I like it. You don't have a patent on this do you? Coz we're gonna use it.:)

Yeah, got it patented along with patents on message filtering, and even message writing :) Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com - Now with "Recommendation" postings www.MyQuickPoll.com - Now with Recent Poll List
