It worked for Clinton from the time of the first World Trade Center bombing.... maybe Kerry thinks he'll get lucky if he gets elected and Al Quada won't pick on us. That seems to be Spain's idea of how to deal with terrorism  Uptight Ex-Military Republican married to a Commie Lib - How weird is that?

That sounds like what Bush has been saying. We can't really win the "War on Terror", but we have to continue to hunt the terrorist down and bring them to justice. (mind you not a quote, but essentially what I've gotten from his speeches, etc...) BW The Biggest Loser

Technically, the guy did what he should as an elected official and has presided to the will of the people (who didn't want to be in Iraq in the first place) and did what he said in his manifesto. Is that what you americans have come to expect and want, leaders who say one thing and do another? I wish Tony Blair would ante up and start saying what he intended doing rather than saying one thing and doing another the minute he gets power. Rhys A bus station is where a bus stops. Well, instead of reading a bunch of random quotes that are intended to make him look bad, I've been listening to his speeches fairly consistently for 3 years and understand his take on the War on Terror to be that of a long term initiative, which is what Kerry said too. Stricto sensus, it is an unwinnable war, because there will always be a wacko ready to explode something to be heard. IMO, the mistake was to label the fight against terrorism a war, it sounds good on a marketing point of view, but it doesn't fit. For example, accomplices of 9/11 slaughters aren't consider as war criminals, they aren't soldiers, are they? They are murderers. Of course it will be a long term effort to reduce dramatically the threat, an effort which will need much more than military actions to succeed. Terrorists will fail. IMHO, they are making the same mistake than Germany, UK or the US did during WW2, believing the morale of the civilian population would collapse because of terror bombings. The morale never collapsed, neither in UK nor in Germany or Japan, on the contrary, these bombings gave powerful arguments to propagandas to bolster the civilian resistances.

Well, instead of reading a bunch of random quotes that are intended to make him look bad, I've been listening to his speeches fairly consistently for 3 years and understand his take on the War on Terror to be that of a long term initiative, which is what Kerry said too. Well, if Bush is reelected and he keeps invading countries that have little or no ties to terrorist organizations, you can be sure it will be more than just a "long long" term initiative. And just think, we could have focused on Afghanistan and Bin Laden and left Hussein cornered like he was, and maybe now we wouldn't have the chaos in Iraq with the countless casualties and the many more to come. X| But hey, let's give Bush 4 more years, right?[^] Regards, Alvaro

Spain deals with terrorism for decades, and never "ran" in front of the threat. Zapatero (the guy) honored an electoral promise he made long before the bombing. The vast majority of Spaniards (90% IIRC) were against sending troops in Iraq in the first place, but the previous Prime Minister, Aznar, his brain obscured by a vision of Spain becoming a World Power by becoming Bush's puppy #2 (guess who is #1) didn't care about the opinion of his people. They aren't as gullible as the american electorate seems to be, you know.
