A few of my friends have gotten VOIP service for their homes and of course I've seen ads all over the place for the new broadband phone services. But now with more and more companies coming into play, what should I be looking for in my service? I hope to be making a decision pretty soon, but I was hoping to get as much information from any of you who have experience with VOIP. I just want reliable service for a good price and with some cool and useful features. Any help would be appreciated.

I've had Vonage for over a year now. It is cheap, and it works well. I am happy with the service. Costs me about $35 per month, including long distance and several international calls. For a few weeks, I was experiencing dropped calls, but once I stopped using Bittorrent, that came right. In other words, if you are into P2P, it may not be ideal. The other problem I had was with my DirecTivo satellite receiever, which likes to phone home occasionally, to receive software updates. Tivo does not like Vonage, and I had to hack around the problem by purchasing and connecting an external modem to my Tivo. Finally, you should be aware than 911 calls may not work as well as from a normal phone. They are routed differently, and may not show your information to the operator. Apparently Comcast digital phones are better in this regard.

Thanks for the help. Regarding the 911 issue, most of what I've read led me to believe that routing 911 calls was an industry wide problem, but I recently read something about a company called SunRocket that has evidently overcome this routing issue and your information is shown to an operator. The whole 911 thing was one of my main concerns, but it seems the problem is not as widespread as I originally thought.
