I was actually looking for someone here that had a newer digital camera (preferably one of the models listed). Just looking for opinions... "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

I'd investigate the Nikon Coolpix series of cameras. I have a CP990 which I love. They make a CP775 which might fit your requirements. Also, check the digital photography review site: www.dpreview.com Steven J. Ackerman, Consultant ACS, Sarasota, FL http://www.acscontrol.com steve@acscontrol.com sja@gte.net

The 775 and 995 are brilliant (the 995 replaced the 990). I had an Olympus and it was nice - but the fact that it used SmartMedia instead of CF was a real PITA. cheers, Chris Maunder

There's been some complaints about the 995 in the DPReview Nikon forum. The show stopper with the 995 for me was the proprietary battery. An in-law has a CP990 like mine, and he recently bought a Sony DSC-F707 which he raves about: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?cameras=sony_dscf707&method=sidebyside This is a 5MP camera, but it uses the memory stick unfortunately. I've got a 1.x megapixel Kodak DC215. Works like a champ! Eats batteries really fast! :((

I personally have the DC3600 (which is exact same as my DC240 I used to have, just more pixels) and it does a great job. Under $400, uses compact flash - fits about 100 images on a 64meg card. You can get an add-on attachement to use screw-on lenses (if you do this, buy good lenses, not the cheap stuff which will ruin your shots). It's not an SLR, but it's decent. If you can get the DC3600 used for about 2/3rd of retail, jump on it.

The Kodak 3500 is also a good unit. Available for less than $300 with good features. Ed

I have the Canon A20 and it rocks quite mightily. :) I got it for mainly vacation pictures and other outside shots, and it's been great in that capacity. I only have a couple pics online ATM, here and here. (They were taken on an overcast morning, so the colors are rather dark.) I'll upload a zip file with some vacation pics here as well. --Mike-- My really out-of-date homepage Buffy's on. Gotta go, bye! Sonork - 100.10414 AcidHelm Big fan of Alyson Hannigan.

I've got a Polaroid 640 - it really sucks. Lousy resolution, slow image transfers, eats batteries, and their support is noxious. I installed Win2K Beta3 one besotted night and it suddenly ceased working. So I emailed tech support, and they told me that they had no intention of ever supporting Win2K. How helpful... I know darned well that, if they were serious about the photo business, they must have had someone working on new drivers, and in their place, I would have offerred me the beta versions to play with. Right now I'm looking seriously at a Camedia (I think Olympus makes it) being sold locally for $279US. It is a 2.1 pixel model with lots of storage, 2x digital and 3x optical zoom, and it can work for short videos and as a webcam. Let us know what you get, and how you like it!

I got a Casio QV2300UX a couple of months ago, on an end-of-line sale so the price was £170 inc taxes (US$240'ish). 2.1 Mega Pixels 3x optical zoom (4x digital) USB connection CF - I use my 1Gb IBM Microdrive (3000 pictures at highest settings) I bought it because it sounded too good to be true, when delivered, at least five others at work ordered the same model! Regards, Ray
