They're a little more lax, but they're basically the same. [EDIT] College rules are a little more lax...[/EDIT] Some notable exceptions: College: Only have to have control of the ball and one foot in bounds for it to be considered a reception. Pros: Must have both feet in bounds. College: Once you're down, you're down, whether by your own doing or by contact. Pros: If you slip, you can get back up and run as long as an opponent doesn't make contact with you while you're down. There are special cases of this, such as touchbacks, etc... If I remember correctly, Canadian Football has a larger field and a faster game pace due to 20 seconds between plays instead of 40 as in American Football. Also, I'm partial to division I-A college football most of the time because it's just more exciting to watch. A bunch of kids trying to make it to the pros usually put in more effort than the guys making millions of dollars per year (not without exception, of course). The skill level is obviously higher in the pros, but you can't beat college football for pure entertainment. *Hopelessly lost on a tagnent* :-O Jon Sagara "There are lies, damned lies and statistics." -- Mark Twain.

i've played american football for 4 years.. now i've quit (knee) the difference between candian and american football is (as much as i know) that there are less people on the field in canada.. i've heard that 95% of the plays in canada should be passes, hardly any rushes (runs).. means that if your son is one of the big boned (like me 6.1, 220 lbs) guys, it is better for him to play american football cause more rushes means more fun.. if he is more the fast guy it is better to play canadian football, cause for the fast guys more passes = more fun.. (knew one guy from canada playing canadian football, then he helped us during the season in europe.. no problem for him or for us... we play american football with college rules.. the college rules are more precise.. and you aren't allowed to do as much as the pro's are allowed i for my part just played college rules) i really had a good time doing this.. and i loved and still love the sport bernhard (btw.. you can't compare rugby with football.. cause rugby players don't wear any safety equipment (besides shorts) but they don't get contact like football players got.. but maybe i just should try it out)

Sometimes I think the surest sign for intelligent life elsewhere in the universe is that none of them ever tried to contact us.

Colin, as an American, there is no way that I would get my son (or my daughter for that matter) involved in football. Football is simply a game of genetic mutants and/or people who are willing to use very high levels of strength enhancing drugs. Much the same goes for basketball, but at least basketball involves a little finese. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching a football game or two now and again, but it leaves a lot to be desired as a sport for children. I agree wholeheatedly that games like soccer and rugby are all around better sports. Anyone with heart and stamina and determination can play. Being 350 pounds or 8 feet tall does you no good at all against some little guy who is running circles around you. Sports is one area where I totally agree with foreign criticism of the U.S. (That is about the only thing the rest of you guys are right about, however);P Wisdom from the Hippie Ages: (oops, had this a little wrong the first time.) Joe DiMaggio was a member of one of the best baseball teams ever. The New York Yankees. Of course the fact that you've heard of him in South Africa, and I had to look up the spelling of the name says something :-D

A real mans sport, American Football is for poofters Damn right. I cannot understand a game where the players wear 10 inches of foam padding and have to stop every 10 yards to either catch their breath, invite one of their other 257 teammates on the field to take their place, or (it seems) ask directions on what they should be doing. Too bizarre. cheers, Chris Maunder

There is a good reason that American Football players wear pads. The game is primarily about directed force. When you have a line of men averaging 300 pounds and you are about 300 using your full force to knock a hole big enough to get a man through to the Quarterback, severe injury will result. It's not a matter of players being 'poofters'(?) I was watching a documentary about the increasing level of injury in American Football, and basically the doctors said that as the athletic ability of the players increases the pieces of the body that get injured (ligaments, tendons, bones, etc.) are not getting stronger. So here you have a 270 pound running back who can run 3x as fast as his couterpart from 50 years ago (who was only about 180) and when the impacts occurr, something has to give and usually it is the player. Played the way it is, without padding, not a single player (except maybe the kickers) would walk off the field at the end of a game. The sports are completely different, so I'm tired of American Football players being compared to rugby players. There is no comparison at all except that the ball looks similar. From an internal company e-mail November, 2001 -- "Would the person who stole the ethics training manual from the class last Friday please return it."
