Does that include changing channels, or getting up to go to the bathroom to 'express my feelings towards their ads', during ad breaks? I bet the entertainment industry execs would just love that. Though, I guess, technically its not ad skipping, just avoidance.
Searching the web without Google is like straining sewage with your teeth.

As consumers, the only defence would be to boycott products that abuse us with unwanted/excessive advertising. I would rather send a nice two-finger salute to bullish advertisers and dollar-hungry media content providers, than allow them to pin me down while forcing consumerist b# down my throat. We DO NOT HAVE TO SUBMIT! We CAN AND WILL PUNISH ABUSERS. WE ARE THE CONSUMER, and PRODUCT B DOES EXIST! (We hope). :mad:

Turn off the TV and read a book, or, if you insist, rent a DVD. It has been a while since I last saw something really interesting on TV (PBS or cable). Even Discovery Channel is not the same anymore. Yes, even I am blogging now!

Well, actually, it even means that you cannot skip information such as trailers at the beginning of DVDs. You will have to sit through ever trailer, commercial or anything else they put on the DVD... I already am tired of that one as several DVDs block you from FFWD on some of their messsages. A quick tip - sometimes if you catch the DVD right at the start when they ususally show you the publisher logos before the ads you may be able to hit skip back to jump to the end of the film or a special feature, etc, then you can press menu. I do that out of habbit now: insert DVD, press skip back, press menu. You don't even notice anything.

Not if all VCRs and DVDs are sold without a forward button. Next thing you know, they'll take away the rewind button so you have to sit through the whole thing again. These two options will kill the B-movie industry. :) Or, they'll create smart TVs that show you've already played this entire movie once during this rental, and you can't play it again until you rerent it. I don't think it will prevent you skipping the ads. The proposal is to ban the use of technology to skip them. I think that means some kind of automatic skipping gizmo and wouldn't be intended to make it illegal for a couch potato to press a button on the remote control. As long as society is prepared to consume stuff that's partly funded by ads (like CodeProject) they will have to accept the ads. I would (usually) rather expend a little mental effort to ignore the ads than pay more for the product/service. I imagine that the ad-ignoring part of my brain must be fairly well developed now (unlike the rest!)

This is a PVR device similar to TiVo with one significant advantage, IMHO: there's a button on the remote that makes the device jumps over thirty seconds of programming everytime you push it. It does not fast forward; it just jumps. TiVo has fast-forward but no jump. I just read in this morning's paper that the TiVo people are going to start inserting interactive advertising during the fast-forward period. The idea is that the viewer can opt-in to the ad and get special offers, etc. Also, the TiVo company will be forwarding ad-watching data to their ad-vendors. Personally, that's way too much info being shared about my viewing habits. Sadly, IMHO, TiVo has been much more heavily marketted vs. ReplayTV, so most people aren't even aware there's a competing device that works better and is more consumer friendly regarding privacy. TiVo collects viewing habits data which it shares with advertisers and producers; ReplayTV does not. If this bill goes through as it stands right now, that will be yet another nail in the (lack of) privacy coffin. 'til next we type... HAVE FUN!! -- Jesse

When I record stuff from TV on a PC, I pre-edit the file to remove the commercials. It takes less than a minute to remove the four or five commercial breaks in a show. After I resave the video it's all ready for commercialless viewing pleasure. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. Well, you have to use a peice of hardware or software in order to do that. That is what they want to make illegal. If they are going as far as forcing you to see all promotional information on DVD (the stuff that comes before the show), then I would imagine they will battle to have DVRs once they have a method to identify the commerical part. Of course, all that would take years, and I personally see most media moving to video on demand within a few years. By then there will have new ways to supply you with the advertisements and laws such as this would be, is ground work to control you in the near future.
