Dear Bob How are you? I am bored. Hope you are bored too. Anyways, I've been thinking. Or maybe I just think I've been thinking, cause here's why: There's this guy on TV who says that in about fifty years or so we'll have robots that think they're thinking about what they're thinking. What he means, I think, is that they'll think they're conscious. Do you think that if they'll be thinking about thinking they'll be conscious? Or do you think that it will be just an illusion we give them so that they'll think they're thinking, and that we'll be the ones that are really thinking, or will we just be thinking that? I don't think we would ever want to let on that they're thinking about thinking 'cause if we do we'll have to say they're self aware, and then we'll have to give them souls, and then our kid sisters will want one too which would suck. What do you think? Your friend, Timmy

Here is something to think about. Does thinking about thinking really constitute self-awareness!? :) Ant. I'm hard, yet soft.

Now define thinking. What's the difference between thinking and intelligence? After all, a thermostat is a (very very primitive) form of intelligence - based on the current temperature, it 'decides' to turn the air-conditioning on or off. Higher intelligence simply takes more factors into account, and includes its own decision making process as output (that is, it can learn). Yet the thermostat is hardly conscious. I think that if the robots think they're thinking and therefore think they're conscious - but we know that it's just an illusion we've given them, then who gave us the illusion of being conscious by telling us that thinking about thinking is self-awareness... Bob, perhaps ? OK, so we're merely robots who - in 50 years time - are about to invent ourselves... That's  But who the heck invented US in the first place ? Do you know why it's important to make fast decisions? Because you give yourself more time to correct your mistakes, when you find out that you made the wrong one. ColinDavies wrote: Do you take taht literally? Depends on what you mean by literally. If you mean are we created to look physically like God, then the answer is no. God has no physical body. I believe that we are created with God’s characteristics of love, compassion, caring, faithfulness, and forgiveness. We do not live up to those characteristics, but they are in us none the less. But this is starting to get to be soapbox material, so I will leave it at that.
