Does anybody know of a professional/enterprise level FTP server. I need something reliable and able to handle large volumes of users and bandwidth. post.mode = postmodes.signature; SELECT everything FROM everywhere WHERE something = something_else; > 1 Row Returned > 42

ftpd.. on windows? IIS FTP sucks big time and every user needs a windows user account. For a site like http://wdevs.com/[^] it would cost me a fortune to use IIS FTP as we have quite a few FTP users there ;) - Anders My Photos

I just installed FreeBSD to use as a Subversion server. I'm hoping it lives up to all the hype. :)

My ArticlesWell, one of its many pluses is that it's not as convoluted as say, some popular Linux distros. It also has one of the best (or the best) TCP/IP stacks in the world. And, it's also considered by many to be one of the most stable OSes available. Of course, the right (er, wrong) software can bring any OS down, but with a simple base install you'd be hard pressed to make the server crash regardless of the stress you put it under. Jeremy Falcon

Well, one of its many pluses is that it's not as convoluted as say, some popular Linux distros. It also has one of the best (or the best) TCP/IP stacks in the world. And, it's also considered by many to be one of the most stable OSes available. Of course, the right (er, wrong) software can bring any OS down, but with a simple base install you'd be hard pressed to make the server crash regardless of the stress you put it under. Jeremy Falcon

I agree with Anders - the only blot on our Windows Server 2003 DC/DNS/File Server/Vault Server/Exchange server/Intranet Web server's uptime is the fact that the power supply round here is pretty flaky. Now we have a decent-sized UPS on it, it should get quite long uptimes. Currently on nine days, which is when we replaced the undersized UPS with the new one. This server is actually a home-brew P4 on an AOpen motherboard with an Intel chipset (845GE - ick) with three ATA hard drives (from different manufacturers - a Maxtor 40GB boot/system disk, a Hitachi Deskstar 120GB holding the mail data, and a Western Digital 120GB holding the file shares). The key point in most computer systems is cooling - if the computer overheats it will go screwy. Ensure you have the right cables for the hard drives - 40-way IDE cables are a stupid economy, because 80-way cables are only pennies more expensive and work with all parallel ATA drives. Make sure the system's power supply is rated for the load you're putting on it - this system is rated at 420W. I'm currently running a stress test for a customer on a pair of HP ProLiant DL380 G4s, handling 1200 transactions/min on our hand-held terminal application server. These have also been up for about 9 days - I think this might have been a power outage as well. I've found in the past that VIA chipsets have tended to be unreliable. Before upgrading that server box, it used to use a VIA chipset on a Gigabyte motherboard with an AMD Athlon processor. After blowing three processors in a year we'd had enough. Stability.
