Damn the stupidity of the principal is just mind boggling. I'd be curious how representative of CA this is? That's pretty idiotic. However the quotes from both sides in that article are typical religious nutter speak (it boils down to "everyone who's not in my religion is against me!!!"). Of course, what some of the red states are doing is much, much worse - renaming "creationism" to "intelligent design" to try and hide the fact that it's creationism. Then forcing "intelligent design" to be taught in schools while also banning the teaching of evolution. So much for freedom of ideas and expression (then again, religions aren't big on that to begin with). See today's You Are Dumb Dot Net[^] post (Nov 24) for more. --Mike-- LINKS~! So what? Our courts have been ignoring the founding documents for about the last 70 years. Why should children waste time being educated on such historic trivia?

Michael Dunn wrote: See today's You Are Dumb Dot Net[^] post (Nov 24) for more. Gee, with such tolerant perspectives on the most sacred traditions of this country (from the very same people who preach unlimited tolerance towards Islam) one wonders why the Christian community would feel so paranoid and defensive ...

Revolution doesn't begin in the courts. :) But seriously, it seems like we have to plug the leak before the hole gets much bigger. The left has incrementally taken away so much of the ideals that this country was founded on...it has to stop somewhere. Seriously, as a strong proponent of the concept of state's rights, I would defend any local community's right to refuse to teach the content of the declaration of independence just as I would also defend another community's right to teach creationism - even though I disagree with both points of view and would vote against either extreme in my own local community.

I saw this on Drudge, too. I wondered what the real story was, because the headline is written to inflame the religious people. (Look at those evil, secular lefties they are taking away everything we believe and indoctrinating our children!) I had to wonder if the teacher was using it as a jumping off point to a religious discussion or some other sneaky way to get religion into the classroom. On drudge, I clicked on the link to "Patricia Vidmar, Principal..."[^] hoping to get the principle's side of the story. No luck. All drudge did was provide an archived link to the principle's email address and phone. This was really low. The principle should respond, but now she is going to be flooded with email and phone calls. She should not have to respond to the public on an individual basis. The fact that it was an archived link means the school cannot change the page to remove the phone/email information and provide more information, which makes it even worse. I say shame on drudge! The quote from the smoking gun: "Williams alleges that Vidmar cracked down on his lesson plans in May, shortly after he distributed an example of a presidential proclamation. The document he chose was one issued by President George W. Bush dealing with a National Day of Prayer." I'm a bit surprised that the teacher would choose to bring in a document on the "National Day of Prayer", since it doesn't seem very high up on the "pertenance" meter. I'm guessing the teacher was bringing it in for the purpose of using it as a jumping off point to other religious discussions. Who knows, but some of the actions do seem a bit suspect if the sole motive is to teach kids about history. No, I'm not saying that teachers can't discuss these things. I'm saying that Williams may have a history of trying to wiggle religion into the classroom for the purpose of taking about religion. Then the news agencies will shrink it to a soundbite "DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE BANNED AT CALIF. SCHOOL!" ----------------------------------------------------- Empires Of Steel[^]

Michael Dunn wrote: See today's You Are Dumb Dot Net[^] post (Nov 24) for more. Hey Mike, I had thought you were more intelligent than to believe tripe like the stuff posted on that web site. I read the first paragraph, and came to the conclusion that the site has absolutely nothing constructive to say when it said "creationists" believe black people are only slightly better than monkeys. I am sure you could find some KKK member who is also a creationist and say all creationists are KKK members. It is that kind of rhetoric that leads to people believing that jews control the world, that americans are protectionist, war-mongering, right-wing nut jobs, etc. To refer people to that site in order to become informed on the evolution/creation issue is like sending people to a neo-nazi site to be come informed on race relations. I had thought better of you, but am dissappointed as usual.

Hi perb a what? I was relaying what the article said. Headline Declaration of Independence Banned at Calif School quotes from article A California teacher has been barred by his school from giving students documents from American history that refer to God -- including the Declaration of Independence. Among the materials she has rejected, according to Williams, are excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, George Washington's journal, John Adams' diary, Samuel Adams' "The Rights of the Colonists" and William Penn's "The Frame of Government of Pennsylvania." If the teacher has been banned from studying the Declaration of Independence, then I have a problem with it. Actually, some time back when people were stopped in the streets and asked to comment on quotes from the Declaration of Independence, most thought it was a Communist document. So right-wingers ought to be happy that this Commie propaganda is not being fed to young impressionable minds! ;P PS. Of course, remember that the average US citizen was able to identify Mr. Clean 80% of the time compared to measly figure in the teens for some Vice President, so we are not talking about the brightest bulbs in the Christmas tree here.

Gary Kirkham wrote: If the teacher has been banned from studying the Declaration of Independence, then I have a problem with it. you know perfectly well that the teacher was not banned from teaching the Declaration per se, but rather he was forbidden from using parts of it and other documents (listed in this and other articles about the incident) as a way to teach a curriculum that the principal and some parents disagree with, and that was tangential to the Declaration itself. your appeal to idealism is, IMO, disingenuous, and your initial statement is hyperbole.
