Is this an illusion or is VMTU actually bettering my connection
-
I am trying out that VMTU thing Colin wrote. I am ona a sherad 64 KBPS line and speeds are normally pathetic. But now strangely there seems to be an improvement. Maybe this is an illusion. But if not, then I'd reckon we have one hell of a piece of software here. Good work Colin. Anyone else has had similar experiences? It's no illusion - i've had an improvement also. Clever how it works though. God knows what it does, but it does it well. Simon Hey, it looks like you're writing a letter! Sonork ID 100.10024

There are three possibilities: 1. It's an illusion. :(( 2. VMTU really rocks. :) 3. You were bribed by Colin to post this message. :( No matter what, there will be a lot more people trying out VMTU. I would love to have that illusion everyday (don't take #3 seriously, just my pool sense of humor).

Nish, Weird question I know to ask, but I watch a documentary about 'Broadband' in India a few weeks. Its seems that the poorest of the poor are employed to lay broadband across the Indian sub-contient and are paid the meanest of wages. A friend of mine who works in the boardband technology sector here in Ireland once tooted to me, that in India you could get a broadband connection anywhere in under 14 days, and what chance did we (the Irish) have against that type of world competion, given that we are still roling broadband to our capital, two years after it was supposed to have been completed at horrendous expense. I just wonder at what expense (I don't mean in fiscal terms, I mean in human life, suffering etc) it is happening India. Regards Ray "Je Suis Mort De Rire"

I tried it for a while on my 56k dialup, and I honestly didn't notice any difference. :(

If your 56k is already working at its best I dont think vmtu does anything special. But my connection normally sucks [both home and office]. Maybe that's why I noticed. vmtu must have got a chance to get things better. I dont know how it works. The docs dont say much. Frankly I dont know Ray. We dont have broadband in my city. I dont know about the other major cities. But Trivandrum is probably in the top 20 cities list in India and yet we dont have broadband yet. Yeah, maybe my settings were already at their optimum for my line conditions. Can't win them all.

We don't have broadband in South Africa either. (Unless you count satellite d/l'ing and radio frequency, which from what I've heard can be slower than dial-up at the best of times) I've heard from various sources, that xDSL will become available in the not to distant future. (I'm just wondering about the cost...)

In the place where I live Chennai(India), they've been digging left/right/center on all of the major roads laying the colorful fibreoptic cables. I guess sometime during next year we can start having better broadband conenctions. We already have private ISPs giving DSL and Internet Thru Cable services. Cheers Kannan

Oh boy! That is good news Kannan. In more ways than one. I am happy for Madras. But the bigger reason is that I have seen similar activity in one or two places in Trivandrum. So maybe, just maybe........ Nish Sonork ID 100.9786 voidmain www.busterboy.org If you don't find me on CP, I'll be at Bob's HungOut

Bruce, I wish I could catagorically state VMTU will have an effect, on a connection or it won't. But its impossible to quantify the results it seems since there are so many factors and variables to take into account. For example if you are surfing CP and CP is on one of its go slow modes, then VMTU whilst still working will have no visible effect. The other scenario where VMTU fails is if you have an ISP that does not have enough bandwidth out to the gateways. So far 99% of the feedback falls into two distinct groups, 1. Has a visible effect, 2. No visible effect. My 2 cents. Regardz Colin J Davies

Sure I'll call you "stupid", anytime. :-) The 1% of feedback is to rude to be read and generally not applicable to research further, Also comments like "Your website Sucks" or It won't run on my Apple Mac, etc. :-) Regardz Colin J Davies
