so i get a replacement laptop (bye bye sony) and it has sp2 on it ... anybody tried to uninstall this piece of s&$t??? every single hotfix requires a reboot after removal AFTER scanning the whole pc to tell me what might not work without the patch!!! i am so hacked off with the windows uninstaller im considering nuking the thing and using win2k pro grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
It's likely faster to nuke the disk and then install Win XP without SP2. :ducks: I feel for you. It's not fun dealing with replacement hardware/software that's different from the original. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. Yeah I am kind of interested in why you are uninstalling all these patches and getting ride of SP2?
There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't. We shouldn't assume something's debugged just because everyone in the whole world has access to the source code.

This may be a stupid question, but why bother uninstalling SP2? Gary While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.' - Dilbert

Yeah I noticed that. I have been having problems connecting to my wireless network and getting internet access. I was so frustarted I just about gave up and assumed that it was the cable company doing something to not allow me to use my router.......do you know the exact issues and if there is any documentation on the problem?

I'm having sometimes trouble with my internet connection (cable and wireless router). Sometimes it gets very slow, and it disconnects my Messenger, and web pages don't open... but I'm connected by wire to my router... can I blame SP2 also? -- LuisR

Uninstalling SP2 isn't that hard. They actually included a routine to do it for you. Read On: You can also use a hidden folder SP2 made to initiate its own uninstall routine. In the Run command box, type c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst \spuninst.exe. This will start the SP2 uninstall wizard. Follow the prompts. Somebody should give me a cookie for this tip

I'm curious because I've just installed a wireless network and had a few instances where http stops working and RealPlayer also stops connecting to streaming audio. I hadn't thought it could possibly be XP SP2, I just thought I had a screwy router. I might have to do some further research now. Michael CP Blog [^]

That's odd..we've actually found it more reliable since upgrading. The new interface seems a lot better too. The one thing I am finding a pain is the "local machine lockdown" for scripted web pages. Try as I may, i've not found a repeatably safe way to add "the mark of the web" to generated HTML reports so they work as expected. On my Sony laptop (*ducks*) it would drop the connection from time to time if you were performing an intensive task like file transfer, streaming media, etc. Since installing SP2 I haven't noticed this happening. *quickly touches wood*

The only time I had problems with that was when the vendors wireless connection / configuration program was running at the same time as XPs Wireless Zero Configuration service. You can either turn the WZC service off and use the vendors application or vice versa. Steve
