Interesting Thread - Hourly Rates
-
Just wanted to point out that there is quite an interesting conversation going on in the "Business of Software" section of the Joel on Software forums regarding hourly rates in various locations. I've never understood the secrecy (and fascination!) involved when talking about other people's salaries and such, but if you'd like to read the thread here is the link: http://discuss.joelonsoftware.com/default.asp?biz.5.37727[^] Hope you find it as interesting as I have! -- Edward Livingston (aka ExtraLean) -- "I still maintain that seeing a nipple is far less disturbing than seeing someone get their brains blown out." -- Chris Maunder

Hourly rates have no real interest to me. I am only interested in what I take home at the end of the month. Ant. I'm hard, yet soft.
I'm coloured, yet clear.
I'm fruity and sweet.
I'm jelly, what am I? Muse on it further, I shall return! - David Walliams (Little Britain) -

Ummm... doesn't your hourly rate affect that? -- Edward Livingston (aka ExtraLean) -- "I still maintain that seeing a nipple is far less disturbing than seeing someone get their brains blown out." -- Chris Maunder

This is pretty much specific to consulting/contracting. Usually "regular" programmers tend to be on salary. And of course, there are thing such as benefits, taxes, etc.... a company with great benefits might have a better overall package than one with a better hourly rate. (Especially here in the US, where many employers subsidize a great portion of health care insurance costs, but others do not...) And taxes vary by location. An expert is somebody who learns more and more about less and less, until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.
