I found myself starting to gain back the 14 lbs. I lost. With it being winter it's always dark before and after work so I needed to find an indoor activity. This will be perfect I think. Colin Angus Mackay wrote: I must try that. If you can I highly recommend it. BW

If you want to get the same workout at home (maybe on those days when you can't go to class or when out of town or whatever), have a look at Bas Rutten's MMA workout tapes. Bas Rutten is (was) a thaiboxer/freefighter in the 90's who was a 3-time pancrase and undefeated UFC champion (MMA = Mixed Martial Arts, UFC = Ultimate Fighting Championship). It contains 4 CD's with workouts for boxing, muay thai, all-round fighting and all-round workout. I guarantee that you'll get into the best shape possible if you do the all-round fighting workout 3 times a week for only 8 weeks :)

Woo Hoo! Congratulations, Brian. I've been doing Taekwondo, which is very similar to kickboxing, for over 7 years, and love every damn minute of it! The soarness SHOULD disappear within a few weeks as your body adjusts. ;) Keep up the hard work, amigo! Kyosa Jamie Nordmeyer - Yi Dan Portland, Oregon, USA

I remember a similar time in pain when - during one of our Karate classes - we followed the local Jazzer-size instructors. At first we all (especially the guys) smirked that this should be no problem. Boy we were wrong. Even after all the hard workouts Sensai put us through every other night, just after 5 or so minutes we were ready to collapse. Out of all the instruction I've taken - Taekwondo, Karate, and some kickboxing - adding the word "aerobic" every so often makes those nights a dreadful night! I feel your pain. These women have been doing this for years." I couldn't keep up, but it's a goal to be able to. BW

Hey Brian. If you don't mind me asking, where did you take it and who was the instructor? I work with a woman that teaches that. I need to do something also, but never have the time...

Well I was finally coerced to take part in an aerobic kickboxing class tonight. My legs are more sore than they have been in ages, I'm exhausted, but feel freaking awesome! A co-worker of mine has been going for years, and I was supposed to go with her to class a few weeks back, but I had a cold and didn't feel up to it. I said I'd go tonight as long as nobody laughed at my useless blubbering mass when I fell in an exhausted heap after 5 minutes of working out. I'm proud to say I never collapsed and feel exhilirated. The actual kickboxing part was great! Nice to take my frustrations out on the pads. Can't wait for Thursdays class. :-D BW

Not sure about that exactly. I have a long, long, long way to go before trying anything like that. A few factors are involved I think. One is setting the boards so they are supported as close to the edge as possible to make it easier to bend the middle of the board. The second part is toughening up your skin to handle the blow, and also you need to know exactly where to hit the board. So aim and speed at impact. BW

I've fought some thai boxers before (martial art club at school) - I think their main weapons is the fact that they dont seem to feel pain when you hit them. And they have really though shin and stomach. One of these guys suggested rolling beer bottles over your shin (i tried, it only hurts like hell :) ) Norman Fung

First, NEVER EVER believe what you see on TV when it comes to martial arts, unless it's an actual sporting event. Watch a typical martial arts movie, than sit down with an Ultimate Fighting Championship tape, then note the difference, and you'll see what I mean. In movies and TV shows, you see a lot of head kicks and jumping kicks, because they're flashy and fun to watch (which equals ratings). When you watch the UFC, you'll notice VERY few head kicks, and even fewer jumping techniques, because in a real fight, they're mostly useless. Kicks should be kept low (knees, shins, etc.) in a real fight. Second, if you do want to strengthen up your shins and forearms for striking and blocking, you can A) let them get hit, then take LOT'S of Ibuprofin, or B) use a strengthening tool, like a Wing Chun dummie, or a roped pole. Kicking these also force your skin to toughen up. Third, breaking objects is all about speed and accuracy. If you simply try to "strong" your way through something, it's never gonna happen. You need to hit fast, and as close to center as possible. My toughest break ever was a side kick through 4 boards, no spacers (required for my 2nd Dan). I failed to break the first two trys, but nailed it the 3rd. The difference? Speed and accuracy, which I didn't have so much of the first two tries.
