I see no honor or loyalty here – I only see stupidity and carelessness.

I think Norm means the honor and loyalty and commitment to his wife and that, thankfully, it does still exist in our World. It is not something he was prepared to sacrifice, even to save his finger. I may not agree with it, but it was his choice to honor his beliefs - what is stupid about that? Or did you mean something else? P.S. Battle is a cool name for a Marine.

I think it was stupid also. A ring is a symbol and can be replaced. Would his feelings for his wife be diminished by getting a new one? Would the strength of the marrige be challenged by cutting the ring for what is a very practical purpose? What if he lost the ring one day, would he file for divorce?

What if he lost the ring one day, would he file for divorce? He already did lose the ring  -- Read Steve's post above. Matt Gerrans

True, the ring could always be replaced. Besides, I'm sure his wife would much prefer full massages, which will never be the same again. :-D "For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you would never have considered.
