Wat is going to happen with IT. On one side, theres so much hype about "offshore and outsourcing" and on the other side "open source". The first one I understand because it comes from the business. They always want to save money and ofcourse the currency rates forces them to go offshore. But the open source is pushed by IT people by themselves. Don't they want to EARN a living after a few years. Do they want to give away all the software for free? If people can get everything for free, why would they buy anything? Whats going to happen to IT people in North America? Free software, cheapest labour(offshore).

I think the idea is that the money is made through support contracts and customisation and configuration consultancy fees. But, I don't see how that is sustainable - There are lots of companies that write bespoke software, or configure systems (I work for one) but once the job is done there are no residual royalty payments so more work has to be found.

I think open source is a far larger threat than outsourcing ever will be.

Yeah I've seen people say that before, just what we need, software companies that make their money by supporting their software. Hmmm...no conflict of interest there. I can just see it now: Manual? Why in the world make a manual, if people find it hard to use they can just pay for support. What? A bug? We'll just get around to that in a decade or so when we've finished squeezing every ounce of support money we can out of it. The Mafia perfected that system a long time ago, it's called "protection". I just get so damned angry when I see otherwise perfectly intelligent software developers go on and on about open source freeware etc. It's like automobile factory workers in the 60's spending their free time perfecting assembly line robots and then giving them away for free. Insane, completely and utterly insane.

It's the end of all good things. If you work in a tall building, jumping through the window is probably your best option...

The future will be great for those that can innovate and move technology ahead. Just look at you or the people around you and see how little technology they really use. Greater use of technology is coming in the future. It is always changing! perhaps you should actually go and find out what open source software is all about, instead of ranting about it without any factual basis. -- Raoul Snyman Saturn Laboratories e-mail: raoul.snyman@saturnlaboratories.co.za web: http://www.saturnlaboratories.co.za/ linux user: #333298

Ahhh, another one! Perhaps you guys should come back with a reply or a fact of some kind. Every time I have this discussion with an open source advocate their only reply is either "You don't know what your talking about" or "I can't believe you said that, you're so wrong". I have yet to find anyone willing to discuss this. I swear it's like discussing religion with a new convert, they just have their faith and that's all that's required to support what they are doing. I understand completely though, it's not easy to defend the indefensible when the inconvenient things like facts start to get in the way.
