I just tried it. I click on the little "^" here on CP to follow a link, and it opens a new WINDOW. I try a few options but there appears to be no way to open the link in a TAB. Is it me, or is this thing really as klunky as it looks and feels? I know there's people that rave about it, but they've got a long way to go compared to Avant. Marc MyXaml Advanced Unit Testing

The base firefox isn't that great. What they provide is a platform for writing extensions. XUL is an older simple delcarative xml GUI language. (something you might know about) This is the best tab extension http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_tabextensions.html.en And if you need all the link functionality go to the main extension page and download the extension to send ie headers to the web server to work around the cp browser detection routine. I also really like the gesture extension.

Errr...Tools->Options->Advanced->Tabbed Browsing->"Force links that open in new windows to open in:"->"A new tab"? Or is that only in the newer nightlies? I'd have to go downstairs to check out Firefox 1.0. [EDIT]You can also get used to just middle-clicking (you know, scroll wheel clicking?) all the links. That always opens in a new tab.[/EDIT]

Firefox rocks. It's the extensions which make it THE browser. Use the Tab extension mentioned by Andy. I switched from Avant to Firefox. Here is my extensions list: Enabled Extensions: (15) Adblock 0.5.2.039

I agree 100%. The raving is completely baseless and anti-microsoft as far as I can tell. It doesn't block popups as well as I.E. does, half the websites I go to don't work properly including this forum etc etc. If I hear one more person go on about the reason for all that being that Firefox is supporting some standard that I.E. doesn't I'm going to barf. What the hell do you think a standard is people? It's the one that everyone is using.

Sorry to make you sick, but... ;) Security is number one reason! You do not get attacked every time some web site redirects you to some spyware installer. My wife nor my self has had one spyware application installed since switching to FireFox and she would get them weekly with IE. Number two has to be the extentions. There are some nice ones! As a web developer, I love some of the tools they provide that just do not exist on IE (unless it is some add-on I do not know about). For my old tied eyes, I also love the FoxyVoice extention that allows me to highlight text and have it read the text to me :) Every now and then I will find a site that does not render properly and FireFox still has many bugs, but it is getting better and at least I am not worrying about viruses as I did with IE. Yeah, I've heard that, but I honestly have never gotten ( :~ ) any spyware so I can't figure out how people are getting it in the first place other than clicking on the "click here" links in popup ads maybe, but that's not the browsers fault and seems more dangerous in Firefox since you get more popups (or I do at least).

May be that I do not go to the sites that require them that much, but I know my wife does not get a lot and she DOES go to those kind of sites :) After running Ad-Aware on my machine, I found that I also had spyware that was installed via IE without my knowledge. It is a gamble visiting almost any web site out there while running IE. As for FireFox being "more dangerous", it is just the reverse, FireFox does not allow Active-x controls to run and virtually eliminates those spware programs from installing. And that is by default ;) Of course, you do not want to get hit with some of them that other developers have (who will remain nameless ;) ) and end up formatting and reinstalling ... IE is fine for LAN based internet apps, but for the Internet, MS needs to really get going and strip a bunch of junk out of it, along with fixing many of its CSS and HTML rending bugs. Explorer doesn't block pop-ups. You have to install someone else's software if you want to do that with explorer. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. I used to be an avid IE fan and still use it for Microsoft-related websites. The reasons I now use Mozilla are: 1. Open in background. I can open link on the background instead of switching over everytime I open a link. This is one most single annoying feature of IE that I hate. I can also open several links easily while reading the current page and waiting until the links have finished loading. ALSO, mouse-wheel clicking on a link opens it in another tab. 2. Mouse gesture. Handy when I feel I'm too lazy to use the keyboard at all. Also faster than searching for icons (e.g. forward, backward, refresh, bookmark, open link). 3. Safe(r) browsing experience. I'm not sure about the security side, but so far nothing has hijacked my Mozilla toolbar or changed my homepage :-D Those are the three main reasons I switched over. Edbert P. Sydney, Australia.

Userfriendly, 2003/06/07But I thought IE couldn't do all those things? ;P Joking asside, for what it does I don't find IE to be bloated at all? It views web pages... that's about it, surely?

I think you can right click on "^" (or any link) and select Open Link in New Tab. That's how I've been doing it anyway. I've been using FFox for a couple of months, and find not having to run AdAware or SpyBot every 5 seconds is pretty cool thing (although I still do it, just out of paranoia).

I'm not a fan either... I find IE has faster rendering and response times. I find it very klunky as you put it. I only have it on my desktop for cross browser code checks It's frustrating being a genius and living the life of a moron!!!

... and another firefox thread ;) the funny thing is nobody seems to have real arguments for firefox. i always here it's the best and safest browser on earth - but why? nearly all features that firefox have are already avaible in free IE addons. i like firefox, it's a nice browser i just can't see any reason why it should be better that IE with addons. it seems many people using avant and don't even now maxthon. this browser has much more than firefox, and hey there is also a "use gecko engine" function so you don't have to use two browsers for crosschecking sites. so if you using firefox and u love it, check out maxthon.com and tell me why i should use firefox instead. i can't see any reason ...
