Any recommendations of a good Microsft Word plug-in that will save documents as PDF files. A lot of my clients are asking for documentation as PDF format. I need one that can handle complicated documents with graphics and embedded VISO diagrams. I don't mind paying for it, but would rather not spend a lot. Michael CP Blog [^]

The makers of PDF - Adobe[^] - have such a product that you've probably used many times: Acrobat (though the full version, not the reader). This has plugins to save not only Word - but Excel, Visio (with layers, using supported PDF versions), and more - to PDF, giving you options to use tagged text (for re-flow), generate bookmarks from headings, and much, much more. It also installs a printer by default that allows you to print from any application to a PDF, though you don't get all the nifty features like bookmarks and layers. The only way to do that is to use the plugin (and no "print to PDF" application those some of those previously mentioned can do that; directly automation of the application in question is required). It's not too pricy if you plan on using it a lot. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I still use http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/[^] for most of my non-work stuff. At work we have the full version of adobe since we also have to have digital signature capability. Full adobe (which is expensive) is required at work. At home, and even for some projects at work PdfCreator works well. PDFCreator works well since it captures the output from the printer, anything you can send to a printer, you can put in an PDF, but it lacks the sophistication of putting in some of the PDF headers. But it does offer settings to secure the document to print only, view only, etc. Jeff _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Install a Postscript driver (The Adobe Generic one works fine)[^] print your document to a ps file and use ghostscript[^] and GSview[^]to convert it to PDF. All for free. Cheers, Drew.

Have you thought about OpenOffice if can convert Word documents to PDF, it works Ok for me but my Word documents are very simple. I find it excellent for creating the odd PDF file.

Yeah, but will they allow him to embed the visio docs like Acrobat will? Jeremy Falcon

If it'll print then it will be included in the PDF. If you mean hot-linking to other docs then you need Acrobat. Additional advantages of ghostscript include converting the PS file to lots of different formats, not just PDF. Plus you can use it to convert existing PDF files into lots of other formats as well. Heck I've even used it to convert a large set of maps in PDF format into a dxf file so I could use them in AutoCAD. Cheers, Drew.

Last time I used that method I thought the PDF quality was very poor, has it improved now?

The quality depends on the original settings you use when printing to postscript. It's easy to get excellent quality now. Drew.

As people said there are many wierd workaround or free methods, but we use Adobe Acrobat full version and it's simple and works. Keep in mind that "free" isn't so free when you add up your own time involved in screwing around with it to get it to work properly.
