Camera for my dad
-
Dad first wanted an iPod, which he got, but has since decided that he'd rather have a digital camera. Here are his requirements: * A small camera he can put in his fishing vest. * Rugged, waterproof, etc. * Should be non-expensive as possible so if he loses it or ruins it, he won’t feel too bad and can replace it. Any recommendations?

My ArticlesKodak has one of 4 G pixels with 4x optical zoom. No special features and its under a 100 bucks. Were you looking for something that cheap ? "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

Could you please the link? 4 MP Kodak with 4X optical zoom under $100 is a good deal. Farhan Noor Qureshi

My ArticlesI like my Olympus Stylus 410. It's a good camera with lots of automatic settings, but no manual settings and it is rugged and weather proof. I've taken it camping and on digs and haven't had any problems with it. I had to take the front cover off once to clean out a little dirt in the rails once after it had a bucket of dirt dumped on it, but nothing got into the camera.

My friend says he got it in BestBuy about two weeks back. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

I got a Olympus μ mini (it's called Stylus Verve in the US, IIRC) for Christmas, which is a more "stylish" and more compact version. It also claims to be weatherproof, though I haven't yet tested that. Paul asked me about it[^], so I wrote a short personal review[^] about my impressions.

I've heard a few people rave about the dial control making it one of the easiest point and shoot cameras to use. I had the same setting problem with the stylus, but there was a preserve settings on shutdown option on one of the menus that fixed that problem, and turning off the startup animation makes it start faster.

Easy, yes, but also very fast to use. andy brummer wrote: preserve settings on shutdown option Found it, turned it on, now correcting my little rant :-O Again, one of those settings that are so very apparent once you know they are there... My Articleshmm...waterproof is hard to find. I would go with something like a Canon or Olympus that at least doesn't leave its lens exposed when off. But, I would also say that if he is going to be using it while fishing and he wants to get some action shots, you may want to try to find something that takes less time to record the picture to the memory card. I have a great Canon that I got a good deal on at Staples a while back, but with this particular model, I think it takes too long for the image to record on the card and sometimes you miss the picture. You should go check them out in store and shoot pictures yourself to see how fast they take.
