This subject might be hot enough to deserve to be explorated in the Soapbox[^], (the forum dedicated to controversial topics) instead of the Lounge, where the "Kid Sister Rule" applies. I'm sure you'll find in the SB all the political junkies you need to have a vibrant debate :)

Nope, never, especially when legal systems are flawed enough to convict innocent people Though this is probably soapbox material... -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit! Phoenix Paint - back from DPaint's ashes!

You replied to the wrong guy :) I can't believe this thread is carrying on this long...mostly by people saying that this thread shouldn't be here. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

On no. That's going to cause lots of trouble if it stays that way. People yelling at people they didn't mean to yell at .. You know..kind of like a 50's comedy show..in which people throw punches that miss and hit others and starts a brawl. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

Probably a soap box question, but the answer is no, because it doesn't work as a deterrent ( as proven by the USA ), it doesn't allow for retraction of sentence if someone is proven innocent, and it lowers society to the level of murderer. I'm in favor of the death penalty, myself, but I'd like to thank you for stating the case against it so clearly and succinctly. I've never seen the "con" position so well defined. Nice job, Christian!:) "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City

I had hoped for serious opinions. So it is not possible to discuss this topic without bursting into flame wars? When I come think about it, why would I ever post something in the Soapbox? I dont want anything but mature and respectful answers on any topic I can come up with. I find it disturbing that so many people direct the topic to the Soapbox. It kind of tells something about people in general and their abilities of discussion. :-) Regards, Björn Morén Stockholm, Sweden

So it can never work as a deterrent, just because it supposedly (all people do not agree) doesnt work in the US? Sure, the retraction part is impossible. So is the resurrection of the innocent people killed by serial murderers. Would you say that collecting tax lowers the society to the level of thieves? I guess the question of death penalty comes down to the issue of what would be a just penalty for the ultimate crime. The deterrent, retraction and society effects are very subjective and can be proven either way depending on mind set. Regards, Björn Morén Stockholm, Sweden

bjoernen wrote: So it is not possible to discuss this topic without bursting into flame wars? Well...do you feel lucky? :-D bjoernen wrote: would I ever post something in the Soapbox? There are many reasons. First, the SB is unmoderated, offering then more freedom in the answers and let webmasters free of responsibility about the topics. Next, the Lounge is CP's "common place", and there we have to take care to avoid to hurt other people feelings (with the notable exception of VB users, but it's for educational purpose  ). Many people are not interested in politics and would feel attacked and/or unconfortable to deal with such subjects in the Lounge. And because we are well-educated and take care of CP's traditions, we respect that :) And come on, it's much funnier in the SB.

Just takes pure talent, I guess. It's a shame that there's no way of knowing who voted a topic down - I wonder if I've upset someone enough to have gained myself a faithful 1 voter who'll show his contempt whenever I post.. God, I've dreamed of this day! -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit! Phoenix Paint - back from DPaint's ashes!
