I've been considering the purchase of a new digital camera. I'm fairly tight on money at the moment and it is between the Digital Rebel and the Nikon D70. Is the D70 absolutely worth the extra money? Which do you believe performs better under low light? Signature under construction.
Disclaimer: I'm a bit biased, I have a 10D my self :) BrianOlej wrote: Which do you believe performs better under low light? The DRebel, it has slightly less noice at high ISO. But you also need to look into the lenses for each system (Canon vs. Nikon) as you will need lenses for your DSLR and they will last way longer than your camera body ;) In the short run I think you get the most from the D70, which in some things is a better camera than the DRebel. Just note that yu can not get a battery grip for the D70, it might look as a small thing, but I absolutely love the grip om my 10D and I would never get a camera where I can not add a battery grip to. Mine actually never comes off my 10D ;) In the long term I would defenitely go for Canon, they are way ahead of Nikon in their digital technology, and their lenses are slightly better and cheaper :) - Anders Bill's Bar

Get the Canon 20D. I have a 10D and it rocks my socks, but the 20D leaves it for dead. cheers, Chris Maunder

I'm 17 and get paid $6.00 an hour with 17 hours a week. I really dont think the 20D is an option for me. However, that really would be my choice. Signature under construction.

BrianOlej wrote: I'm 17 and get paid $6.00 an hour with 17 hours a week Wow! When I was 17 I made $1.75 an hour, part time, plus all the cold pizza I could eat. But I saved my money and bought a Minolta SRT101 for $386. It was worth it. I understand your plight, but I know many people here who make $6 an hour or far less - waitresses are paid $2.14 an hour here - but manage somehow to raise families of two or three kids. It can be done, though it's not much fun. If you're serious about your photography, take your time, save your money, and buy the best you can possibly afford. I know from my 35mm days that the real cost is not the camera - it's the lenses and accessories. Choose a camera that has a strong following in the aftermarket for these items. If you can't afford the 20D today, but feel that you might need the additional features it offers one day, hold off on your purchase and keep saving until you can afford it. Also check on the availability of lenses, filters and accessories from third parties - they're always cheaper, and often of better quality than what the manufacturer of your camera has to offer. The Minolta was the best camera I ever owned, but Vivitar made better lenses, and sold them at half the cost of Minolta's offerings. The same will happen in the digital market, I predict. I have a Nikon Coolpix 4500, and I love it. But I've discovered that no one makes lenses for it but Nikon, and what they offer pretty much sucks. They also cost more than the camera. I can't fault the camera - it's a great design and it makes me appear to be a far better photographer than I really am - but it limits me so much that I can hardly wait to trade up. I'm going for a Canon next time, I think, and definitely a SLR design. Welcome to the world of photography... it's not for everybody, but it's a great way to learn to see the world in a different way. If you're really serious about it contact Paul or Megan here and get connected with a few of the decent photography sites on the web. You'll find lots of helpful artistic advice out there, along with some well considered criticism that will help you become a more professional afficionado of the trade. There is no contest between the D70 and the Rebel, the Nikon knocks spots off it. It even competes with the more expensive camera that I have, the Canon 10D. So if that is your upper budget, get the D70. Otherwise do what Chris says and get the Canon 20D if you can afford it. This advise is on the basis that you own no current Nikon or Canon gear. regards, Paul Watson South Africa The Code Project Pope Pius II said "The only prescription is more cowbell. "

I'm waiting for the D90 (if it will come out some day). I have an old Nikon n8008 (which become few years ago a N90, the D70 is based on the N70). Look in http://dpreview.com/[^] or [^]for additional options. The D70 is a nice camera, real SLR one. If you want to enter the world of photography, try to get a real SLR and not a point-and-shot camera.

i have a D100 and love it. never used a D70. i already had a bunch of Nikon lenses (from my trusty ol N80), so the Nikon v Canon choice was easy. Image Toolkits | Image Processing | Cleek

Brian, ignore gearhead brand wars, and get down to your local photo shop to try them both for yourself. The answer will follow with no hesitation once you've held them both in your hands :) Looking forward to seeing some results from your new baby when you get it!

For me the choice was easy, I've had Nikons since my 35mm days :) However for a more objective opinion, try this site Clickety[^] Gary Rich Cook: "Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.
