Editing a scanned document
-
Hello again! I have a bunch of documents to scan at home. After I scan them in to my pc is there something special I have to do or is there software that will allow me to edit the text in Word.....if this is possible what is the solution?? Thanks for all your help :-D
There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't. We shouldn't assume something's debugged just because everyone in the whole world has access to the source code.

After scanning, you will probably have some kind of bitmap file. You need a program that will do optical character recognition[^] (OCR) for you, and save the recognised text in some format that Word can open. One OCR program I know of is OmniPage, which works quite well in terms of character recognition, and at least tries to preserve the layout.

I do not know what scanner you are using, but the hp all-in-one scanner that I purchased years ago included a OCR program called readiris. I think I have seen an OCR project in sourceforge also. I can tell you that I have never had great results from OCR produced documents. The number of errors are always pretty high.

For several years now, though, I've been using FineReader[^] and I've been quite pleased with it. It always seems to come out slightly ahead of Omnipage in various reviews.
