Being an Outlook 2003 newbie I am not sure how to backup stuff. I want to backup all mails (in all folders), all my contacts/notes, all my mail-filtering rules, and if possible my signatures too. Can someone tell me how to do this? Also, is it possible to export a particular folder to a single file, so that in future, I can then drag drop that folder back into my Outlook? Say I create a folder called BackupJan2005 and I save it to a file. 3 months later, if I wanna read those mails, can i just drag it into Outlook and be able to read it? If not, is there any external plugin/app that can read Outlook exported files? Nish

You can use the File > Archive option to archive your folders (and other items) into a .pst file. In the future you can import from your .pst file and get your old folders and mails. Hope that helps, Edbert P. Sydney, Australia.

Thanks Edbert - that helps for backing up folders. But what if I wanna do weekly backups of all mails, contacts, rules etc? Do I have to go through this archiving process each time? Isn't there some kinda (probably hidden) option to backup everything?

Turn on Autoarchiving for the desired items. Right-click -> Properties -> AutoArchive. Doesn't work for the contacts and rules though, I think. Cheers, Fredrik

When ever I do a backup (which isn't very often) I just make a copy of the outlook.pst file (C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst). This contains all mail/contacts/notes etc in all folders, but not rules or signatures. You can backup/restore your rules with the rules wizard - Organise->Rules Wizard->Options->Export Rules/Import Rules With signatures you'd probably need to store each one in a seperate txt file and then import them via Tool->Options->Mail Format->Signature Picker->New->Use This File As A Template. As for reading old backups you can just copy them back to the outlook folder (backing up the current one first of course) and then restart Outlook. Tools->Options->Other->AutoArchive. You can configure it to run automatically and you can easily apply the setting to all your folders by clicking on the Apply these settings to all folders now button. Btw, this is actually moving your items from your mail folder to the archive. It's not taking a backup copy of them. To do a propper backup go to File->Import and Export->Export to a File->->Select what you want to export->follow the rest of the steps. Regards, Brian Dela :-) Now Bloging![^]
