I've just finally got an order I made via ebay, 7 CD's and 3 DVDs. All of them look perfectly normal, except that they have extra licencing info on them, they mostly come from iRond ( www.iRond.com.ru, I think ), and some say they are not for sale outside of Russia. Now, I have access to the web, I have most of these albums from downloading them. I buy the albums because I have enjoyed them and want to support the artists. The CD's are being sold as new, the guy has an ongoing shop selling the same things over and over. What I want to know is, are these legal or an excellent knock off job ? Are the artists being paid ? Does anyone know ? Christian I have several lifelong friends that are New Yorkers but I have always gravitated toward the weirdo's. - Richard Stringer

It sounds like it could be an organised criminal outfit. Over here they supply carboot sales with high quality copies that to most people appear legit but the prices are lower than the publishers sell them for. If it is the same thing, the artists won't get paid - the money goes to funding drugs and slavery/prostitution out of Eastern Europe. I have no idea how you would tell though, counterfitters are getting more and more advanced. I can't access the web site you mention, I get a DNS error - server not found?

It's just www.irond.ru. David Wulff wrote: It sounds like it could be an organised criminal outfit. Well, that's what worries me. Obviously, if it's funding immoral activities, that makes it worse, but my fundamental concern is that I'm buying them because I want to pay the artists, and perhaps I am failing to do so. Do you have any organisationsd like FACT over there? (Maybe it is worldwide, I don't know.) If you do give them a call and pass over all the details and they'll probably be able to help you find out if they are legit media or not.

Music bought through ebay or a .ru domain is HIGHLY unlikely to weave a royalty back to the rightful owner. Other than the saving of maybe £2-3 pounds, what benefit do you get from buying this way over, say, going down to HMV or Tower records and buying the album? This way you can ensure that the money is being paid to the authors/catalog holders.

I read it that he didn't actually buy form this iRond.ru site, but rather bought media off eBay that was releaded under their label and is concerned if they really were bought from the label legitimately because the eBay seller seems to have a large supply of the same releases. It isn't clear though, either of us could be right. :~

If it came from Russia or China, and if (item_cost + shipping_cost) < local_item_cost then its almost certainly counterfit and the artists are not being paid.

You don`t buy stuff over the internet from eastern european and asian countries . The chances for them to actually be original are very low . Also if you want to pay the artists send them a donation :) I`m sure you have an original music store in your town and you could have purchased them from there ... so don`t start lame topics to which you already know the answer ! And don`t think about the money`s destination ! It`s like selling a hammer and thinking : Holly S**t whose head will be smashed with it ?!!? That`s all 4 now ! Take care and don`t waste bytes !

There are a lot of bands which don't release their music outside of their own regions, so importing is the only way to hear them. I've never seen an Irond release myself, and a quick search of the main UK retailers doesn't come up with any matches bar one: I found Catharsis CDs on Virgin but they are 14 day delivery so they are probably imported direct from the label. All of Ironds official distributors seem to be Russian-based. TomKat wrote: asian countries Specifically which countries do you mean? I buy loads of stuff from HK, China, Japan - they are in Asia? Not music, granted, but then I wouldnt be able to understand what they were singing about anyway!

And no, none of the stuff I like has local release, try USD35 on import. J4amieC wrote: going down to HMV or Tower records and buying the album? If it was even available locally, I'd probably buy some of it that way, just so I didn't have to wait. I actually contacted the label, and it appears that iRond is legally licencing material from European metal labels like Nuclear Blast and creating media for the Russian market.
