Hey everyone! long time no write!!! Sorry haven't been around much--I'm on a school term now, so not as much time to surf the web! But don't worry, I've missed you all! :) Unfortunately, this post is for school purposes.... :P I was wondering if you guys have any ideas for a project I have. I need some ideas on some emerging technologies for business use... like Biometrics, or Bluetooth stuff or PDAs... but I want a really original idea--the ideas I just mentioned are those that the professor gave as examples... Does anyone know of any cool realllllyyyyy new innovations that would probably have a great impact on the world when they hit the market????????? Thanks !!! Melissa

What I'd like is for my PDA to wake me up in the morning as an alarm, go through my Outlook calender and read out to me ("speech") my appointments for the day and then tell me who sent me mail during the night. It would also be nice if it could switch on the coffee maker too :-D Michael :-)

hmmm...Is the school project a paper? "No one knows what power lies yet undeveloped in that wiry system of mine." Ada Lovelace 1815-1852

I don't know about new technologies. However, about using the technologies we currently have. PDAs just started to be used by doctors to write medical prescriptions, and submit them to the patient’s pharmacy. This will save trees (paper), ensure the correct prescription is given to the patient (no more deciphering scribbles), and the pharmacy does not need to call the doctor to verify each prescription. There aren't that many doctors with this yet, so I expect this to really start gaining some speed. The tv glasses (the ones with transparent tv screens) just started to be used by architects on constructions sites. So that the construction workers can actually see what they need to do while doing it. It’s on its early stages (Boeing is also using this for its planes), however I also expect this to gain speed. Etc. Rodrigo

Hey, a really cool project that might change the world.. what there was a website for Win32 programmers? They could post code, ask questions, post messages, etc. Oh wait, already been done. :-O This isn't really software related, but there is "HomePlug". It is a standard that allows you to use regular outlets as network connections. I think this has been tried in the past, but there was never a real standard. Also perhaps one of either Passport/.NET or the Liberty alliance... that is, a uniform way to log on web sites and transmit name, credit card, etc. Or VoIP (voice over IP - e.g., using IP and networking instead of standard phone lines)? The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Also: Computer Circuits made with nanotubes.. This will definetly make the bigest changes, since it will make processors with more transistors posible. They are only a few molecules thick, and can substitute the current way we build chips. Or computers (chips) made out with genes (they are superfast, and can make multiple calculations simultaneously). IBM has some good papers on this, also Scientific american. Rodrigo.

Incredible as it might seem you are correct in one sense Paul Normally it is called cold fusion. However I think Alex was making a subtle joke Paul, Because cold water fusion is more than just a dream and it actually works. Have you had a cup of coffee or "tea" today, if so you used cold water fusion in heating the liquid. Now do you see the joke Alex made ? Sorry for pouring cold water on your post. :-) Regardz Colin J Davies

Actually, there is cold water fusion. When you take the sea water (cold water) and take the deuterium (?) and convert it up the chain (hidrogen if i remember right) you get energy. This is cleaner than the current nuclear reactors. But it is not a reality yet (though the europeans were really close a few years back, I think they are currently reviewing the data or something). I don't actually remember the whole thing (it happen a few years ago, and I havent read anything else on the subject since). To make a long story short.. If I had that kind of inovation I would be running to the nearest patent office. A few ideas though: - Anything involving security and the "war on terror". - Various emerging technologies to automatically update cars / planes / boats on the weather conditions, traffic, etc. - MEMS (micro electronic mechanical systems). Unlike nanotech, MEMS has real world applications. For example most air bag sensors are MEMS. Any application where a small sensor or other simple gizmo is needed would be a candidate for MEMS. - Of course there's always the coming AI revolution (be here any decade).

I don't know what impact it will have on the world, but there's an interesting article in this month's 'Computer' magazine. It seems IBM has a watch in development. Well, not exactly a watch. Actually it's a computer, worn like a watch, and it really does tell time. The cool part is that it runs on Linux, has a combination wheel and touchscreen UI implemented in X11 graphics, 8 MB RAM, and includes a Bluetooth wireless interface. Now I wouldn't suggest duplicating the effort, but something along those lines would be cool. Maybe a door lock equipped with a wireless camera and image recognition code for visitor identification, plus the ability to unlock if an authorized person wearing one of those Linux watches approaches the door. The video system could make an announcement inside if a guest approached that was known and welcome, or a nasty message outside if it was a bill collector. It might also call you at work if someone unknown made an unnecessarily vigorous attempt to turn the knob, and save the image for delivery later to the authorities  It might even communicate with other such doors and identify where the culprit lived, though if he could afford your device at his house, he wouldn't need to be skulking about your place looking for a way in... Your school library may have a copy of the issue, but the bulk of the work was done by IBM Software, India, and may possibly be found on the Internet somewhere... Let us know what you're working on! I'm working on a telepathic UI that will detect my thoughts and input them in the computer without me typing anything, but so far all it does is draw a blank balloon...

It actually works in the other direction, converting atoms of deuterium into tritium. That's what fusion's all about - combining atoms to make bigger ones. A couple of Utah scientists got drunk one night and put together this experiment in the kitchen. They detected an increase in the number of tritium atoms in their test sample, and concluded that they had acheived cold fusion. The trouble with the experiment is that no one has been able to duplicate their results. That doesn't mean, necessarily, that they're wrong - it just means that no one else can perform that particular miracle at this time. The jury is still out on that one, though I suspect that the verdict will be in favor of Reality. It takes energy to do this stuff, and they weren't using any... I once met a girl from Cape Cod,

Or am I talking to a scientist here and I should actually just shut up? Incredible as it might seem you are correct in one sense Paul Normally it is called cold fusion. However I think Alex was making a subtle joke Paul, Because cold water fusion is more than just a dream and it actually works. Have you had a cup of coffee or "tea" today, if so you used cold water fusion in heating the liquid. Now do you see the joke Alex made ? Sorry for pouring cold water on your post. :-) Regardz Colin J Davies

It's always seemed to me that the point of the story was that the worm should have stayed in bed. At least, that's what I tell the boss... 'Tis better to have loved and lost... much better.
