Any motorcyclists?

I've been looking all over the place for opinions on motorcycle jackets and figured if there's a bunch of guys who have researched and compared this topic to death it would have to be you lot. Lots of places recommend leather with armour (though one guy says leather, no armour) because it slides better, but then a bunch of other people say synthetic with armour because it's protects against impact better. I'll be riding under 100km/h / 60mph. Any opinions? cheers, Chris Maunder

It's been a few years since I had a motorcycle last, but I've always used leather. The newest I have also have some armor on shoulders and knees and also some on the arms... For me, motorcycling is more about curves than speed. Roland

The choices are: 1. Slide and slow down gradually 2. Tumble and break things quickly Leather will allow you to slide without wearing through (most leather can withstand 60ft of sliding). Synthetic tends to either wear through faster or catch and cause a tumble. The trick is that if you slide, then you better hope there's nothing in your path (oncoming car, lamp post etc) cheers, Chris Maunder

leather feels better. if you ride somewhere that not hot you can get a nice thick jacket that will give you better protection all round than synthetic. if your riding a nice jap sports bike then you may get beaten up for wearing non leather hehe of course you can get teflon impregnated jeans now. i hear they slide very well... you cant go wrong with a black leather jacket!

And I being one of them. I have ridden for more years than is appropriate to state, now on my 27th motorcycle and fourth with more than 250,000 miles on it (this one nearing 400,000)... needless to say, I've spent a few hours pondering proper gear. So, what do I wear... an AeroStich Darien: http://www.aerostich.com/riderwearhouse.store As others speak of leathers, I've given up on them years ago. They aren't suitable for poor weather (read: cold or rain), and don't offer the ventilation or structural integrity of the current composite materials. While this will certainly draw jeers amongs the Harley community, leathers are a fashion statement. They were once the best there was... but that time has clearly come and gone. So, if you're riding for nostalgia and don't mind dying for it... the choice is made... but if you ride to live... it's worth a moment to review where the evolution of riding gear has taken us... it's a moment well spent.

My choice is Aerostitch Roadcrafter suit, with padded elbows, shoulders, and knees (look at http://www.aerostich.com/riderwearhouse.store. The one piece suit fit me much better than the two piece. I find leather too hot for consistant use. I bought the Roadcrafter suit about 10 years ago after I hit a deer in eastern Oregon, and I was not wearing my leather because the tempature was about 95 F (35 C). Doh. I was going 55 MPH (88 KPH). Take a look at http://www.gerbing.com/pages/motorcycle.html for info about heated motorcycle suits. More important than the jacket, however, is the helmet. ALWAYS wear a full face helmet. In my deer accident, the chin of my helmet scraped along the road for many yards. YMMV. Curt J. Johnson

Not a motorcyclist myself, but I've worked together with a motorcycle fanatic. He could talk for hours about equipment. He was wearing a full leather suit, padded with a bit of amour, and also used a spine amour for added safety. He isn't like the guy at my girlfriends office who'll ride in wintertime untill he falls of, but he's one of those guys, who thinks that you have to take the corners in a horizontal position. That's kind of the conclusion I'd come to. In the end I've opted for comfort and practicality and bought a composite with leather shoulder and elbow pads, zip out liner, vents, cinch straps, padding and armour all over the place and a fit that allows me to actually breathe. Hi Chris, having a good jacket is surely important. I prefer synthetic with armor cause at the moment I can't afford leather. Otherwise I would prefer leather with armor. The armor is very nice against impact when you smash on the road, I guess... ;-) But even more important for relaxed cruising is good weather. Actually it's quite cold here in Germany and I can't await the beginning of spring! 8-) Winter sucks! Regards, mYkel

Synthetic stuff are now evolved enough to be as performant as leather in case of sliding. An armoured jacket is IMHO mandatory (protections for elbows, shoulders and back), as a good pair of gloves and protections for the legs (short pants are not an option when riding). I prefer synthetic stuff because I find nylon jackets more comfortable, better ventilated, easier to wash and maintain. Leather jackets are more fashionable and might be more efficient in the domain of social encounters :rolleyes: Anyway, I suppose you're aware that falling at 100km/h will still be extremely dangerous, protections or not, mainly because of the obstacles you might encounter. The best protection will always be to avoid to fall :) What bike do/will you ride?

Exactly. I'm tossing up between a Yamaha Virago and a Kawasaki ZZR 250. By law I'm limited to 260cc engines for 15 months :( cheers, Chris Maunder

Two very different bikes[^]! The Kawazaki looks funnier to drive (especially if you feel like a natural disciple of Mike Doohan), but there's also more things to break on it :~ Anyway, welcome in the wonderful world of bikers[^] :-D
