Really wierd Microsoft Word Issue - need some help

I went into Microsoft Word (Office XP Edition) to print out some barcodes for a client. Oh, these are simple Code 3 of 9 barcodes. I enter in the text I want, then change the font to the barcode font. I make sure that only the actual text is selected before doing this. This way there is no space or linefeed. Then I test it with my mighty barcode scanner. (Hey! Its the only weapon I have here) Well, it doesn't work. I recently wrote some software to help this client track their product throughout their plant. So I open the software and print a ticket from it. The scanner picks up the barcode immediately. So I'm comparing the barcode from my software and from Word. Word added a few extra lines at the end of the barcode. So this is why its not picking up. I need to allow the customer to print "cheat sheets" that they want for their barcode scanners. I tried putting spaces behind the barcode to make sure Word wasn't somehow picking up the carriage return. But the last line is the same. So somehow Word is adding an extra character when I change the font. I tried this same process in Word 97 and the printed barcodes scan fine. With no extra lines. Does anyone know of a Code 3 of 9 font that works with Office XP?

It works!! I completely forgot about wordpad. Last time I used it was Windows 3.1 -ish. I just changed the font, printed, and it's perfect. Do you remember when you could use a 386 PC with DOS and 8 Meg of Ram to type up documents? You have to wonder why Word takes a nice chunk of your CPU's processing? Do we really need all the features? I don't. And as far as your reply above, why does Word do that? Thank You Jörgen, now I can go celebrate my anniversary with the wife.

That doesn't work either. I've tried it with spaces, just in case, and nothing. I'll keep trying though.

I think he's aware of the mandatory asterisks. It's just that Word puts crap bars after the last asterisk bar group. Enough crap to make any sane scanner ignore the barcode. The disadvantage is that the barcode will be alittle wider and you must use a smaller font to get it to fit on to a label. You add one extra number, a kind of checksum to be sure that the barcode is read right. I use the same as banks use to calculate their reference number. It is normally not needed but saves your day when you are debugging.
