That's impressive... I once installed Win98 in about 16 minutes, but from the CD, from "setup" to when it has already booted showing the tip of the day... but 8:17?? wow!! -- LuisR --------   Luis Alonso Ramos   Chihuahua, Mexico   www.luisalonsoramos.com

And that includes me going with a custom install where I pick the stuff that gets loaded. "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

When you compare it to Win95 or WinXP, or even WinME, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that it's the only Windows version that I'm *positive* will work with the legacy hardware my sister owns, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that I'm also installing Win2K on the box just in case she can, in fact, use it witrh her legacy hardware, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that Win95 has no/nebulous support for USB (which my ister has indicated an interest in, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that I'm not the primary user of this machine and I don't really care which version of Windows she's using, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. ...to perform a preliminary install of Win98 on the "killer machine" - only 8 minutes, 17 seconds from the time I typed "setup" to the time it booted the last time. I haven't added any hardware specific drivers yet, but still, that's a damn impressive install time. Oh yeah, I had copied the contents of the win98 CD onto the hard drive to save some time. Most of the time I only tweak one feature or two, but I always like to see exactly what is going to be installed... in the case of Windows, one of the features I add is all the administrative apps (performance monitor and the like). I just bought a new laptop (a Sony VAIO R505, with the docking station and all, it's cool!) and it came with an awful lot of things preinstalled... I reached for the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel... and BANG! Killed several of them... I was thinking about reformatting the disk (it comes partitioned and I hate it), but the computer didn't come with the XP Pro CD (only that System Restore which brings it all up to where we stared)... but I remembered that you buy the license, not the software itself, so I can use another XP Pro CD with the product key that came with the laptop in a sticker and it's perfectly legal. Remember Add/Remove Software does not do such a good job. DLLs, registry settings, services etc. are often left behind and then you have to manually remove them. Rather start clean and install up. I would imagine in your scenario, yes it would be perfectly legal, as you own the license represented by the product key. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who work and those who take the credit. ...to perform a preliminary install of Win98 on the "killer machine" - only 8 minutes, 17 seconds from the time I typed "setup" to the time it booted the last time. I haven't added any hardware specific drivers yet, but still, that's a damn impressive install time. Oh yeah, I had copied the contents of the win98 CD onto the hard drive to save some time. I can install Win98 in 2 minutes with all drives and applications. Is it cheating if I use Ghost?

If this is such a killer machine why run Win98?
