Most of the time I only tweak one feature or two, but I always like to see exactly what is going to be installed... in the case of Windows, one of the features I add is all the administrative apps (performance monitor and the like). I just bought a new laptop (a Sony VAIO R505, with the docking station and all, it's cool!) and it came with an awful lot of things preinstalled... I reached for the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel... and BANG! Killed several of them... I was thinking about reformatting the disk (it comes partitioned and I hate it), but the computer didn't come with the XP Pro CD (only that System Restore which brings it all up to where we stared)... but I remembered that you buy the license, not the software itself, so I can use another XP Pro CD with the product key that came with the laptop in a sticker and it's perfectly legal. Or am I wrong? -- LuisR -------- Luis Alonso Ramos Chihuahua, Mexico www.luisalonsoramos.com

Luis Alonso Ramos wrote: I was thinking about reformatting the disk Oh yes do that! I always do that to a new machine. Remember Add/Remove Software does not do such a good job. DLLs, registry settings, services etc. are often left behind and then you have to manually remove them. Rather start clean and install up. Luis Alonso Ramos wrote: Or am I wrong? ...to perform a preliminary install of Win98 on the "killer machine" - only 8 minutes, 17 seconds from the time I typed "setup" to the time it booted the last time. I haven't added any hardware specific drivers yet, but still, that's a damn impressive install time. Oh yeah, I had copied the contents of the win98 CD onto the hard drive to save some time. I can install Win98 in 2 minutes with all drives and applications. Is it cheating if I use Ghost?

If this is such a killer machine why run Win98?

That's pretty cool. You may want to consider installing WinME instead of 98. I suspect it will be an even faster (maybe just by a few seconds) install. I dual boot my (vastly less impressive :)) machine with ME/2K. /ravi "There is always one more bug..." ravib@ravib.com http://www.ravib.com

Well, I will do it... if it's legal, great!! if it is not, well, I already bought one copy of XP Pro... that's one more than most people in Mexico buy, so Microsoft should be happy with me. -- LuisR -------- Luis Alonso Ramos Chihuahua, Mexico www.luisalonsoramos.com

Was that a typo and you mean't "What isn't wrong with Win98?", right? :-D IMHO the problem with Win98 is that it is Win95 at the core but with a billion performance and stability sapping addons added on top of it. i.e. they have not made much effort to optimise the plumbing, instead they put new sprinkler and tap valves on the end bits. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge Martin Marvinski wrote: Unfortunatly Deep Throat isn't my cup of tea Do you Sonork?
