managers who shouldn't be managers
-
Does anyone else have a boss who knows absolutly nothing about the work done by the people s/he manages? My boss came into my cube this morning and told me the web server needed to be rebooted because the local DNS servers were pointing our internal traffic to the wrong address. Personally, I would think that the solution would be to fix the dns issue and flush the dns entries on the clients, since that is where the problem actally was. But then again, I'm not paid the big bucks, so what do I know. I rebooted the server, much to the dismay of the people who were using the applications on it, and guess what...it didn't fix the problem. Instead of admiting that he might be wrong, my boss just got more angry, yelled at me a little, and stormed off. Please tell me I'm not alone. I need to know that mine isn't the only manager who doesn't know crap about what he is managing.
When I got out of college, i went to work at a company and had a person reporting to me. My tech worked 80% of his time on supporting the production floor and the rest on new software. I worked 80% on new software and 20% on supporting the production floor. Our manager was just a paper pusher and did not realize what my tech did. So when he left the group because of a training issue, I was told to make due without him since he "didn't do much anyways". Needless to say that his years or working on the production line and then supporting made him a great person to support the area. I was not able to get alot of new things out the door nearly as fast and was asked why not. Steve Maier, MCSD MCAD

You're not alone...my manager told another employee to deploy a fix straight to production because it was "urgent". (Note: we usually deploy to test first and have a few people use it for a while. You know...standard procedure?) I was at school at the time, so when I came into the office, I had about 50 e-mails asking me why the app wasn't working. I rolled back everything and told them never to touch the production servers again. :sigh:

I have been struggling with similiar issues recently and here is what I came up with. At the heart of the matter, for me, is that there are times I want my boss's technical knowledge and understanding to rival (or exceed) my own, so that I can have someone to learn from and repect for their technical prowess. However, my boss doesn't understand a lot of the technical aspects of my job and she will admit this to me. Given this, I don't have much to gain from her in the technical arena - focusing on this only exaggerates the problem for me. Instead I try to remind myself of the things she is exceedingly good at like ensuring that everyone is satisfied and up to date on problems, being sympathetic and gaining the trust of other execs, diffusing potentially explosive arguements quickly and gracefully, etc. In other words everyone is good at something and focusing on the areas my boss can help me improve in and the ones I can look to her for guidance in makes it much easier for me to not be bothered when she doesn't meet my technical expectations. Take care, Daniel Wilson

Just curious, but did you voice your concerns before just rebooting the server? Sounds like your boss has some insecurity issues, but even still I always find it's better to voice my own concern. It tends to accomplish a few things. 1- I might get a clearer picture of what's going on from their response. 2- My boss will know I'm thinking before acting. 3- I may be right and they'll realize I have a valid concern and be thankful for stopping them, or at least I might get a bit more respect. 4- keeps up communication between me and my boss. You are alone. We all have nice, mild-tempered and socially responsible bosses that are fountains of wisdom.

Not everyone in managment are idiots... I myself was promoted to managment because I worked hard, was good at what I did, and because at the time of my promotion I was told that I was "one of the best". Then again I'm probably just an idiot like you say I am. [EDIT] Umm this was supposed to be a reply to a different post  [/EDIT] Matt Newman
