From the article: But the AOL software could be configured to override Windows and launch a version of Red Hat’s Linux operating system, sources said. Anyone care to take a crack at explaining that one? --Mike-- My really out-of-date homepage "Hey, you wanna go to the Espresso Pump and get sugared up on mochas?"  -- Willow Rosenberg Sonork - 100.10414 AcidHelm Big fan of Alyson Hannigan.

Perhaps they mean using some sort of VMWare type application? I don't think AOL could actually get rid of windows and install linux forcing the user to abandon windows. Way too many people would be looking to hurt some AOL engineers :) James Sonork ID: 100.11138 - Hasaki "Not be to confused with 'The VD Project'. Probably what thwe author meant was that AOL installer would setup LILO so that Linux is the default OS :-) Nish Sonork ID 100.9786 voidmain www.busterboy.org If you don't find me on CP, I'll be at Bob's HungOut

My guess would be that they'd set it up so that when you ran AOL, you'd actually to launching Linux from within Windows and that would open the way to running Linux based productivity apps (databases, word processors, spreadsheets). Remember a few years ago IBM was selling OS/2 for Windows, which installed the OS/2 kernel under Windows, so you could run OS/2 apps within windows. I think this is what they're thinking. I think I'll go back and read the license agreement for XP again, I imagine they've added something to make this approach a license violation. David http://www.dundas.com

One issue here is standards. Past AOL actions have quite often been along the lines of propritary systems. Both their web system and email are examples, where is it hard to do anything from other third party programs. MS, like them or hate them, has usually taken the open API approach. Somehow I don't see novice users (who probably make us the majority of AOL users) downloading a 1GB install set for Linux, much less getting it to work. What AOL might do is to produce some Windows app, based on RedHat code, that somehow expands their options and features. Ed

I'm sure i've seen those first two initials somewhere before. Alice thought that running very fast for a long time would get you to somewhere else. " A very slow kind of country!" said the queen. "Now, here , you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place".
