I'm not surprised at how he went out. He was about the only truly cool thing to come out of the Nixon era.

It's just so sad that they think their life is so bad that they don't want to live any more. I came very close myself a few years ago, and it was only the care and support of a couple of close friends that stopped me. I've counselled a lot of people who were thinking about suicide, and the greatest thing that stands out is disillusionment and a lack of hope - they feel their life is meaningless and can't get any better. In all cases, they were wrong; the problem is trying to convince them of this. The reality is that they are not losers, but that they need help. There's no shame in that.

But I disagree that someone who gives it up and kills himself/herself is not a loser. In your case, if you had given it up and suicided, you wouldn't be here today to make this post, would you? And wouldn't that have made you a loser too, had you done that? Just one life we all have - and a very short life, it's best to make the most of it. Nish

Virginia Woolf is a looser eh? Hannibal? Jack London? Marilyn Monroe? Vincent van Gogh? And wait for it... Alan Turing. Yes, Alan Turing was a looser for committing suicide. Nish, careful who you call a looser. Looser is a dangerous word, it comes back to bite you. I'd say never call anyone a looser. It's not nice, it's not helpful and you probably only drive brilliant but troubled people closer to suicide by reminding them of their own self-worth dellusions. I don't like suicide either. It's a hard thing to imagine but we aren't in these peoples shoes and more than likely have not gone through half the crap they have gone through. Yes, some people are weak but lets not push them over the cliff, please. Making suicide shameful has not helped to reduce suicide rates at all. regards, Paul Watson South Africa The Code Project Pope Pius II said "The only prescription is more cowbell. "
