That would be extremely difficult to answer without knowing your experience/skills details :) If you don't want to give us that info however you could have a look at Career Junction[^] or Google for other SA job sites and have a look around at what is being offered.

Oi, Paul isn't the only South African on CP. ;P Have a look at the 2004 salary survey on this[^] site. It shows that the average salary of the respondents was R24,000 total / month. Sounds a little high, but it really depends on your experience and area of the market you are aiming for. What do you specialise in? You might also find SARS[^] useful. It's our revenue service. That 2004 salary survey link is really interesting Simon. Looking at the average salary it is clear however that the surveyors didn't spend much time talking to Dev's in the Lowveld  I find this sentance interesting: "On the programming side, Java has leaped ahead of Natural and Cobol and remains well ahead of Delphi, reflecting increased adoption of Java across a wide variety of applications and a recession in the importance of legacy skills as companies consolidate, rationalise, update application sets, and move to application integration solutions." While I'm surprised this didn't happen a while ago, it's a pity they don't state where C# and VB.NET falls into this as well as Java.

I kind of agree, but there is quite a lot of Java already in the "enterprise", so it makes sense. What .NET needs to compete with the Java mind set is a viable port of JBoss and a more solid IDE from MS. Having a decent free IDE would also be great. If the free IDE's don't have support for debugging, then I can't see it getting used by any serious developer. Maybe the standard edition tools in Whidbey will fill this gap. Just not sure how limited they are going to be. Cheers, Simon sig ::

It all depends on a lot of things. People in Durban get paid differently to people in CT and Jhb. Depends on the language and how experienced you are in it as well.

So is 15k a month a crap salary for me in Durban?

Sorry Scott - I should have said add this info to your original post :). I'm currently working in the UK, so not the best person to ask - even worse as I've never worked in Durbs (each area of SA seems to vary salary wise). It's possible more people will see your description in your original post than in your reply to me :).
