Sometimes Noam forgets humanities nature-of-the-beast when building his observations and arguments. He sometimes roots his arguments in utopic templates that make for seductive reasoning but ultimately reach unrealistic conclusions. Give me a Churchill-esque observer and commentor anytime. Too bad I haven't found a modern day equavilant. I enjoy the humor of Ann Coulter http://www.anncoulter.org/[^], as a close second to Churchill's scorching humor [^]. don't know anything about his political writing, though i'm told he represents me and that i'm responsible for every thing he says. from what i've read, his reputation as a linguist is a pretty strong one, though his theories are falling out of favor these days. I find him to have a sharp intellect, a lot of knowledge about historic and contemporary events, and he often surprise me with interesting conclusions that are hard to contradict. Exactly. It isn't that his logic is flawed per se, but to accept his conclusion(s) one must first accept his logical foundations. It is those foundations that I believe are sometimes rooted in a premise that are, to my mind, failures to accept humanities base desires and motivations. He's a good read. If they put his essays on the Opinion page of the local paper, i'd probably read it more often. I wouldn't care to make any general statements of agreement/disagreement though. Let's just leave it as "more entertaining than 'Friends', on par with 'Seinfeld'"... ;)

JoeSox wrote: If they have fallen out of favor than whose are in favor these days? really can't say. i'm not into the kind of hard core linguistics where he did his work, but on almost all discussions i've read on him, it always comes up that "...his theory on XYZ doesn't make sense in light of ____" or "his theories on PDQ were interesting at the time, but now linguists think more along the lines of ____". and that's the extent of my knowledge on Chomsky :) mostly i know that, as someone who votes to the left of John McCain, everything Chomksy has ever said on any political matter is my burden to bear - his ideas are my ideas, his opinions mine, his statements mine. in that sense, he's like Michael Moore or that professor from that college i'd never heard of who said something dumb three years ago and now represents the pure crystallized essence of what it means to be a Democrat. or something. fuckin hate politics today.
