Take that, Academy!!

The best part of the Academy Awards last night was definitely how Jorge Drexler handled his "acceptance speech"!! I'm not a musician, but I can definitely empathise with him and applaud his response! For those that don't know, Jorge Drexler's song "Al Otro Lado del Rio" ("To the Other Side of the River") became the first-ever foreign-language song to be nominated for Best Original Song by the Academy (Drexler is Uraguayan). However, Academy Awards producers decided that his name wasn't big enough and announced that Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana would perform Drexler's song at the awards! This is a huge issue to the Latin community as the nomination represented a tremendous accomplishment in getting their music recognized on such a stage. Then not only did their man who wrote and sang the nominated song not get to sing it, but to have people from completely different continents perform it was definitely an insult. It was like the academy was saying, "Well, they speak Spanish, too, so it's close enough." Drexler was very gracious and sat in his seat politely smiling while Banderas and Santana performed *his* song, but it definitely had to hurt as that's *his* song that someone else is getting to perform. So, his song did win the award (smart move, Academy!) and Drexler walks up to the podium, bends over the microphone and ... sings his song acapella!! It was brilliant. Almost like saying, "I poured my soul into this song and I will be heard singing my song." Very well done. He didn't need to flame the Academy or insult anyone. He just got up there, accepted his award, sang his song and quietly left. Without a doubt, the most poignant moment of the evening for me.

By a wideeee margin that was the best acceptance "speech" at last night's awards. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

seems that they tried to have actors do the singing instead of the actual artists. beyonce "sang" in french one of the "the Chorists" song; which from what I read this morning was horrible.

Forgot about that one. That was very dignified, too. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

Wow, too bad I missed it. I wonder if there's any video footage of this online. BTW, Al otro lado del rio usually means On the other side of the river. But I can see how Al could be translated to To. If I was on my way to the other side of the river and someone were to ask me my destination, I would then say, Voy al otro lado del rio. However, it's normally used like this, "Al otro lado del rio se vive mejor." (On the other side of the river life is better). Regards, Alvaro

Actually the translation is from him. It represents not what's on the other side of the river, but getting there; hence "to the other side of the river". Also, my reply to PJ includes a link to his interview afterwards and he also sings there and explains his actions. Thanks for the link, but I will have to wait. The link wants me to update my WMP (currently using v6.4) and on my 28.8 dialup connection that will take just too long to be worth it.

I'm sorry but it was a nightmare. or "How to destroy a song in 3 minutes". The original is very good, but I really don't understand why they choose beyonce to sing it, because first, she can not speak french (it was hard to recognize the song), and second, the interesting part of the song is the choir. And beyonce took all the place, and you could barelly hear the boys singing. just my 2 cents.
