Quote: "Multiple accidents have closed the US131 near Belmont. A six-mile section of the freeway is closed in both directions. State troopers say the crash caused by blinding snow conditions resulted in several jackknifed semi-tractor trailers and the closure of part of the highway. A police spokesman said the crashes started at 9:25 this morning. Responders say at least 80 to 90 cars may be involved in the accidents according to State Police estimates. 47 cars were involved on the Northbound side and 37 cars on the south bound side not including cars that were run off the freeway. One large 12 car accident and another 4 car accident. 29 people went to the hospital with injuries, 2 of in very critical condition. Accident victims were removed from the crash area to a nearby school and then to the hospital. 1 person, a man from Minnesota, was killed. An eyewitness reported that lake effect snow caused a white out situation and cars started hitting each other. All available emergency units in the area had been asked to respond. Buses were routed to the scene of the accident to provide shelter for people who have been involved in the crash. Cars that can be driven were released onto southbound US131 as of 10:35AM. Traffic is being routed off the freeway onto Post Drive and West River Dr. The Police cannot say when the freeway will reopen. The investigation into the crash and its causes has to be completed before vehicles anc be removes and the freeway reopened." -- Edward Livingston (aka ExtraLean) -- "I still maintain that seeing a nipple is far less disturbing than seeing someone get their brains blown out." -- Chris Maunder

I'm glad I'm on the other side of the state! Isn't that the 3rd or 4th major pileup this season? Living in Michigan, you'd think we'd have learned how to drive in the stuff by now... RageInTheMachine9532 "...a pungent, ghastly, stinky piece of cheese!" -- The Roaming Gnome

I'll see yer 90 and raise you another 100! http://www.lbreport.com/news/nov02/tfcfog.htm (November 4, 2002, updated from initial Nov. 3 posting) -- Three multicar chain reaction accidents, estimated to involve a total of over 190 vehicles, took place on the 710 freeway in heavy fog mainly south of Del Amo. Blvd. on Sunday morning, Nov. 3. Roughly forty people were hospitalized, nine reportedly in critical condition. The three multicar pileups took place shortly before 7 a.m. The largest (photo above) involved nearly 150 vehicles and took place in the southbound 710 lanes south of Del Amo Blvd. It spanned Compton Creek and extended southbound to near the area of the Blue Line track bridge. North of that location, another chain reaction accident took place, also in the southbound lanes, involving about two to three dozen vehicles near Del Amo. Blvd. And in the northbound lanes, some cars crashed across from the southbound collisions.
