Ripping DVDs

Legally of course, I have mostly finished my Windows Media Center Box and want to copy episodes of family guy/dilbert to the massive file server that feeds it with media since my MCE box doesn't have a DVD drive. Does anyone have recommendations on what software to use, preferably free. Matt Newman

I use a combination of DVD Decrypter[^] and DVD Shrink[^] to backup my DVD's and to remove the things I don't want (I watch the backup copies). You can remove languages you don't use - and take off the things that inhibit you from going straight to the menu while the annoying warnings, previews etc. are playing. Frankly it works amazingly well. In your case, you could choose to rip just the actual movie and skip all the other stuff. All for free! Cheers, Drew.
I agree 100% - with these two applications alone I managed to make copies of the most watched DVDs I own. When you have kids ... their little fingers tend to not treat DVDs as kindly as some might think; for instance, did you know that when you take a DVD and wedge it between the dumping-part of a toy Tonka dump truck and its cab that it would snap the DVD into two almost perfect halves when you pivot the box up and down a couple times? I know what you mean. I started making backups when my daughter decided to put in "Brother Bear" for the first time. I have no idea how it got that scratched up, but it never did work. Lucky for us that particular title comes with a seperate wide screen disc that we could make a backup from. Now I backup all of them. Cheers, Drew.

I was pretty impressed when I found these two tools. I can make a backup in about 15 minutes (of which only the first 3 or 4 requires me to be there). I especially like that DVD Shrink passes the ISO to DVD Decrypter which burns automatically without my intervention. I basically put in the original, a blank and press go. Cheers, Drew.

Hey, any chance your going to document your media center setup somewhere? I've been interested in this for a while and wondering how practical it is before during and after. (We've had a Sattelite receiver with built in PVR for many years now and I can totally see the potential, it just doesn't go very far with it)

Sure 1. Open DVD Decrypter, choose a directory, and click Run (make sure every vob and ifo is chosen. dvd shrink will do the cutting). 2a. Open DVDShrink,I think it says something like open files from HD. [it looks like the main dvdshrink site is down so go to: Doom9.net, the downloads section, then find DVDShrink 3.2 in the VOB Tools section.] 2b. If you just want the movie, no menus, etc go to the reathur tab and move Title 1 over. 2c. Chose Backup, 2d. I find it's easiest to save the file as an ISO, in this step you should also set the encode type to maximum sharpnes IF the main title is less than 100% of original size. Also check perform deep analysis for better quality. 3. Burn the iso with your preferred DVD authoring software. There are of course other options/tweaks in DVDShrink, but since I don't have it open/installed on my laptop I'm just writing this off the top of my head. It's very intuitive so you shouldn't have any problems.
