The other option the comes to mind is that some well meaning backup software has decided that life was just generally better all round two weeks ago. My sympathies. :rose:

We are talking about four seperate hard drives - one on the server (the data drive) with a raid clone, one removable backup drive that was last cycled on sunday night, and a slighlty older 'scratch' drive copy on my actual PC. All references as far as I can see on all drives have disappeared. One one drive I could understand a freak occurance or an accidental deletion/move/whatever, but to do this on all copies including the backup that wasn't in the server at the time the directory vanished would take a lot of time and conscious effort. AFAIK I do not sleep walk or talk or delete important files. I am having a *really* hard time explaining to myself what could have happened here. I am holding hard copies of some of the documents in my hands right now and yet nothing else seems to exist.

Of course. As somebody pointed out, it can be some backup thing or whatever. My point was that if files are gone, they are probably deleted, and good tool can sometimes get 'em back :) I didn't mean it like you deleted all your files... but appereantly, somebody or something deleted it (if you are sane and files you are talking about really existed). AFAIK what's "deleted" can be recovered if not rewritten with stg else. This won't tell you what happend, but it may be option how to get data back. Anyway, good luck! It sounds like real mystery. How could they have been deleted from seperate un-connected drives, including one that was stored off-site and not in a machine? Sherlock Holmes said that when you rule out all that is obvious what you are left with is the truth, but I can't even find an obvious question to this answer... :~ dnh wrote: Anyway, good luck! I can't risk the time to try and figure out what the hell has happened and see if I can get those files back, so I've isolated the backup again just in case and am recreating the main stuff on my local hard drive. It's like being back at school again - the day before some important coursework you left till the last minute is due in.

Um... time to cry I think... I have gone looking for an entire directory of very important files. I've looked on the network drive, it isn't there. I've looked on the local clone, it isn't there. I've stuck the backup drive in and it isn't there. I've looked in my recent files history and all referencs to any of the files in the directory have disapeared. The documents aren't even on the MRU list in software that had opened them. I made a jpeg of one of the documents to send to a friend over MSN for proofreading, placed on my desktop, which has also gone. It really is as if they never existed! Only I know that they did exist, and I need them back. This is really starting to creep me out because I can find no evidence that they ever existed. Missing from the source drive, my local clone and the backup drive that was cloned only this passing Sunday... WTF is going on? :((

Don't suppose you have a scanner around. If you did, you could send them to me as a tiff file or something similar and I could use the OCR software I have. It's a far-sight faster than typing them all back in again.

The thought has entered my mind more than once now - in fact every time I try to think what the hell could have erased them so effectively them not existing in the first place is the only logical explanation I can find. Except I know I can't be imagining it because I have hard copies in front of me, and they must have come from somewhere. :~

Show the printouts to someone else, asking them what they think. If you get a response along the lines of "yes, blank paper, so?", you might as well just go back to bed.
