Telstra are SCUM

For those not in Australia, Telstra was our national telephone monopoly. It's open slather now, but Telstra still maintain the lines, etc. We don't have our phone on with them, nor can we. Years ago, I had a mobile on a $500 a month plan. I disconnected it, but they didn't do it, and so they sued me for $600 ( it took me over a month to find out and make ammends ). That's a long and old story. Cut to now. We had a LOT of rain recently, in fact I believe we had 1/4 of our annual rainfall in one summers day. After this, our phone line started to have a lot of crackle. We called our provider, who then has to call Telstra to get it fixed. Telstra called my wife and told her he'd checked the line and it was fine. He blamed the crackle he could hear when he called on us having a cordless phone. I'd already told them that I'd checked a normal phone and also that my modem was connecting at 4.8 and then dropping out. I called and abused them. A week later, on a Sunday, I looked out my window and saw a Telstra truck. A second later, it was gone. The guy had not spoken to us while on our property. I went out to look, and right in front of our garage was a hole in the ground, exposing the phone wires. I went in and tried the phone, it was dead. The next day ( a public holiday, as it happens ) the phone started working again. The hole had rows of used bricks over it, which did not cover it, but marked where it was. The bricks were mine. A few weeks later, I got sick of the hole and called again to complain. This time I complained at length - the guy came onto the property, did not talk to us, did not finish the job, etc. A week later, Telstra call me to clear it up, and a few days later, the guy comes and fills in the hole. Here's the kicker. They called me yesterday to make sure I was happy to have the hole filled, and mentioned in passing that I'll get a letter from them soon, as the technician ( the one I complained about ) claims the original problem was caused by us deliberately tampering with the phone lines, which is a finable offence, plus we have to then pay for his visits. This is a total lie, I've not done ANY digging in that vicinity at all. I've not got the letter yet, but I foresee a visit to the courts, and even then, I presume the law is written in such a way that my protests will count for nothing. How else can they prosecute people who DO cut up their phone lines ? It's obvious to me that the guy is making this up to punish me for the bollocking he would have got as a

I agree that Telstra can be quite unpleasant to deal with (personal experience :mad: ), which is the result of their de-facto monopoly in Australia (they own the communication infrastructure). Semi-privatized, fully privatized, or any other way, they’ll behave arrogantly as long as they own the ‘copper wire’. Australia needs real competition in this area, ground up. Can you switch to Optus or somebody else, in your area? Hit them where it hurts. Dejan
I've been with AAPT lately. Like I said, after the $600 thing, they won't give me service as I refuse to pay. The funny thing is, they claim they didn't chase me up about that because they could not find me ( I found out about it when I folded after years of refusing to use them because of ANOTHER nightmare experience I had and tried to get broadband while they were the only provider in the state ), when we are the only Graus family in the state, and they PRINT the phone book. You probably don't want to hear this, but I had the complete opposite experience with them a few months ago... When I moved into my current house, the phone didn't work. I tested with a cordless, a normal phone and my modem, and there still wasn't a dialtone, so naturally I assumed the line was stuffed. I called Telstra and they sent someone out to check the line, after telling me there'd be an $80 charge if the line was fine. The guy who came out called me that evening and said he couldn't find anything wrong, and suggested I check the physical line inside the house. He was right. It was totally screwed - the previous tenants had obviously got on the roof and pulled really really hard on the cable and snapped it in two. The good thing is that Telstra didn't charge me a cent, even though all their lines were fine. I think it just depends on who's doing the job at the time.

At least here in California, the phone company (and cable company) are required to leave a notice on the front door if you are not at home when they arrive to check things out. The notice indicates when they arrived and what was done. They always knock on the door to let you know they have arrived. When you call in the trouble, they schedule a time when they will be on site (usually a four hour block) and they are very good at keeping the appointment. You get a call if there are any delays. Later that evening you get an automated call to summarize the visit. Steve
