Hi guys, As you can guess from the title, my good lady wife and I are expecting our first child (in June). We've been trying to find that special name without success. We don't know if it's a boy or girl. That'll be a nice surprise on the day. Any suggestions would be great. We're looking for something not too strange, but not so common that everyone in his/her class has the same name. Thanks in advance Andy
No specific suggestion, but some rough guidelines: :bob: Do pick a name that is not too difficult to spell or pronounce. I feel bad for people whos names are always mangled or misspelled. :bob: Do not take a common name, and change the spelling. :bob: You might consider picking a relatively common first name, but make the middle name something real special and unique. My middle initial is T, even though it is a lie, I always tell people it stands for Tiberius. :-D :bob: I tend to prefer names that have been used commonly for many different generations. A lot of names tend to be specific for a particular generation, and you can tell the rough age of a person just by their name sometimes. Not sure if I explained that correctly. The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance.

We had a daughter on Feb 14th (yes valentines day), we called her Lina, it means tender. Our sons are Rockland (but Rocko to everyone) and Stockton. We chose them because they can be translated into most other languages without sounding too horid.

congratulations Andy. my wife and i couldn't agree on any names, boy or girl. Finally, we agreed on Caera, a derivation of Cara which in Italian means "dearest". We chose the Gaelic spelling though. best of luck! :)

Here on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver island many of my friends parents were old time hippies and so the kids ended up with very typical names like "sky" or "raven" but one of my friends parents did have a good idea, when their son was born they couldn't decide on a name so they decided to let him choose as a "rite of passage" when he turned 12. They called him "Noah" up until he got to choose. He chose "Faro" and would never explain why, but it seems as good as anything else. Although maybe in this day and age you can't get away with that kind of thing. There is actually a *lot* of research out there on names and how people are perceived when all you know is their name but haven't met them yet. You should look into that failing anything else because there are clear trends involved there and no sense in saddling your kid with a potentially bad name. (it wasn't based on particular names, but based on vowels and consonants etc)

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I think names should be choosen in honour of people near and dear to you. Boys should be named after their grand fathers and uncles, and girls after their grand mothers and aunts. It is a very good way to cement the bond between them. I was named after my maternal grandfather and we were always close. I know my name has special meaning in the family, and is not just something my parents came up with on a whim.

Are you sure this is a good idea? Some friends were mine were asked the same thing by a nice Danish couple they met on a holiday. My friends claim they were not told what the names were for, so they imagined something like a mild curiosity attack or a research for a travel book. Now they refuse to admit any responsibility, but they sent a mixed list with both boy's and girl's names, no other explanation attached. Needless to say, the poor baby girl ended up being called Vasile, which might sound great when pronounced with a Danish accent but it's as much boy's name as you can get in our country. Plus she'll have to spend a lot more time than most 'average' girls spelling her name to people. But that's not so bad for a girl, being the 'fair sex' they seem to be able to get away unharmed with a lot more things than us, rough, tough guys :-) OGR

I'm surprised at you people. There is only one name possible. Bob. :-D

I agree. It is an excellent name. In fact, when Canada polled its citizens to find out what they wanted the Northwest Province to be called, Bob was the leading candidate. Bob. Not Robert, not Robbie. Bob has the additional advantage of being a palindrome. :-D

If it's a girl born in June, how about June as a name? :) Vikram.

If it's a girl, I'd like to recommend Shalimar. Shalimar was an extraordinarily beautiful spirit, a student at my karate school who was a delight to see, to talk with, to spar with; intelligent, sweet, a quick and agile learner, and beautiful to boot. About a week before I finally worked up the courage to ask her out, she was killed in a single-vehicle rollover accident - a fluke, as no drugs or alcohol were involved. Something just went wrong, and she was called home early. That lovely name deserves to be preserved, preferably in the same spirit that she wore it. If it's a boy, nothing short of Bob will do. If it's not certain, how about Butch? "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City

Congratulations! Got a boy and a girl myself last year in June, and we faced the same challenge. The boy is named 'Kåre', pronounced 'core', and it is fairly special but not uncommon in Denmark. I guess it would be too special in your part of the world :-D Our daughter is named 'Freja', which is so common, that I have to whistle instead of calling her name when she starts in kindergarten :-). My girlfriend is still a bit irritated, because she wanted her to be named 'Iben', would sound a bit like 'Eeben', but I just found 'Freja' too cute. How about Mathilda?, for a girl of course :-D, and Alexander for a boy? Wait until the baby is born. I found that I was inspired after seeing my son. The name just popped into my head (almost like he told me his name, for you new-agers out there). When I said his name, my wife thought it was perfect (phew!) His name is "Ian". Marc MyXaml Advanced Unit Testing YAPO

Congratulations!!! I'd like to recommend a few names :) How about Mikka for a girl? It's pronounced "Me' - kah. I've heard that in Japan it's a common girls' name, but here in the US when it came to me, I had thought I was being original! I also like "Karma" for a girl. For a boy's name, sorry I can't think of anything unusual, without the name being tortuous for any potential owner. I like names that are spelled similarly to how they sound, so the poor tyke doesn't need to spell and re-spell it for everyone (as other people have mentioned here). Also like names on the shorter side. My sis-in-law Stephanie often complained to me how during school tests (computer-read type) she'd have to fill in each circle for each letter of her name- she took longer than most kids around her because of the length of her entire name. Best of luck!:rose: blueSprite
