Jamie Nordmeyer wrote: What happened to the 'A' battery? Well before Energizer break down your door and haul you away, never to be heard from again, the reason is that "A" batteries really last 6 times longer and cost just 2cents a battery. Naturally Energizer don't want anybody actually buying these as their profits will fall. Either that or when they first typed the name back in no-backspace-days there was a typo and they couldn't be bothered to change it. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge Martin Marvinski wrote: Unfortunatly Deep Throat isn't my cup of tea Do you Sonork? You mean there really WERE 'A' cells? I just figured someone in marketing was drunk when they originally named the different battery types. Jamie Nordmeyer Portland, Oregon, USA

Jamie Nordmeyer wrote: You mean there really WERE 'A' cells? I Ummm no, not as far as I know. I was just talking shit, as usual :) Read John Simmons reply, he seems to know what he is talking about. Jamie Nordmeyer wrote: I just figured someone in marketing was drunk when they originally named the different battery types. Sounds like a good explanation for lots of product names... The AA, C and D size designations originated in the US at a time when battery-operated valve radio receivers were widely used. These receivers had already laid claim to the A and B designations: the A battery (usually a lead-acid accumulator) heated the filaments of the valves, while the B-battery provided the high-voltage supply for the anodes. Therefore, new cells could not use the same names and AA, C and D sizes were adopted. What happened to the 'A' battery? We have 'AA' and 'AAA', but no 'A' battery. Is the government using them all? Are they being used in sattelites? How about the 'B' battery? Where'd it go? Jamie Nordmeyer Portland, Oregon, USA

I've actually used "A" size NiCd cells in a project, so they do exist. The size is 50x17mm. A bit of Googling turned out this page on Panasonic A size NiMH cells.

After considerable field testing, we decided that releasing a viable PVC sheep was just a pipe dream. "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001
