DVD player (hardware question)

Try cleaning the lens. The (over)sampling with DVDs is less than CDs so it takes less to screw up the tracking. Jerry My DVD collection[^] He said this was like painstakingly assembling the first layer of a house of cards, then boasting that the next 15,000 layers were a mere formality.--The Code Book, pp. 331 Toasty0.com DotNetGroup.org
I took the cover off and didn't see much dust inside. I gave it a couple blasts of air, but no luck. If I can find the lint-free cloth I have for cleaning my binoculars, I'll give that a try on the lens. --Mike-- LINKS~! Hopefully a CPian will be able to give me some advice here... I have a Sony DVD player (stand-alone, not in a computer) and yesterday it started refusing to play any DVD. Up until yesterday it was working fine. When I put in the disc, it spins up and the head seeks around, but after about 20 seconds it throws up a message saying "can't play this DVD, sorry". What's weird is it still plays CDs and VCDs just fine, so the moving parts are still working. Any suggestions on things to try before I give in and go have it fixed? --Mike-- LINKS~! The CD and DVD use different lasers (different wavelengths). Thus, DVD Playback may be broken while CDs still work and vice versa. I have two older DVD/CDRW Combo-Drives in my home computer. One only reads (and writes) CDs, the other one only reads DVDs. Cheers Sid

ack! Actually I was thinking about a little DVD that has a small brush on it that sweeps away any dust that may be on your lens. Repair will probably cost you more than a brand new unit... so, if you can't fix it, I'm saying throw it away and get a brand new one.
Well, this is a DVD+VCR combo, so it wasn't cheap. And it's only about 4 months old, so some of the repair cost will be covered by the warranty. --Mike-- LINKS~! Ericahist | 1ClickPicGrabber | CP SearchBar v2.0.2 | C++ Forum FAQ Strange things are afoot at the U+004B U+20DD

Region Code maybe? All (most) DVD players allows changing Region Code five times only. After that it will play just DVDs with last set Region Code (on PC you could use DvdRegionFree app to avoid the change, but stand along player is hopeless in such case). VCD/CDs do not have such "protection" at all. Your description matches this possibility pretty good. Cheers. gnk
