The story so far... For non-UK :bob:ians, NTL is the cable operator in the area I have just moved to. Oh dear. Basic TV, phone and 1Mb/sec broadband for £30/month sounds good. I was up early on Saturday morning waiting for the engineer to arrive which happened at 9.30. Most of the installation went well except for one thing. Yes, the broadband connection. It turns out that from Friday morning the installation engineers had been seeing some lines not work for broadband so he spent an additional half hour making sure there there wasn't an equipment or installation problem, very thorough. In the end he had to say the problem was at the head end and he knew the they were working to fix it. This morning (after the help line not knowing there was a problem) the line is working. Except... The system for registering a new cable modem wasn't working  Now at lunchtime the NTL website says that is fixed so I hope to (finally) get online this evening. In short, when I get a permanent house I will be going with ADSL and Pipex again. The people trying to help have been great but the service so far has been terrible. Elaine (growling fluffy tigress) PS This is sent from work at lunchtime. The tigress is here :-D

I made a typo, and was going to send you this link: http://www.nthell.co.uk/[^] (for non UKians, Telewest is a rival firm.) This[^] is the site I meant to show you though. Air and share your problems there, you might get some help, especially wrt their BT-like levels of 'customer service'.

Make sure you delete any temporary internet files before you try the online registration system - it has a habit of caching the "something went wrong" page and displaying that in preference to submitting your details. This had me tearing my hair out for hours trying to get a neighbours NTL broadband account working My general experience of NTL is that the actual content they provide is very good, but when things go wrong, you're in for a world of pain and suffering! Bytemark[^] (the people who provide my webhosting) also do a rebundled ADSL package, and I've found them to be nothing but incredibly helpful (you're unlikely to get personal help from one of the CEOs of NTL if something isn't working right!) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit! Phoenix Paint - back from DPaint's ashes!

When it works it works well, when it stops working you'll be without a connection until the lottery they call customer service hands you a tech support worker who has even a slight clue.

In my area NTL users are either very happy or really annoyed. I watched them wiring my street, they laid, what looked like, standard co-ax cables an inch or so below soil of the front gardens. Now once the owner sells the house and a new owner moves in they tend to dig the front garden, after that for some reason NTL no longer works!
