Sabbath mode..

So I'm considering buying a wall mounted oven and I'm perusing the new models and come across a "Sabbath mode" feature. What the hell is that? I think to myself (being completely non religious, indeed anti religious even): http://www.wordspy.com/words/Sabbathmode.asp[^] Now isn't this a classic example of breaking the spirit of a law by following the word of the law? I admit I think religion of any kind is just plain silly, but if you are going to adhere to it, shouldn't you really adhere to it and not try to trick your way out of it? If I was a dark and vengeful god I sure know I would smite down those that tried to flout my will this way...maybe this is just proof that god doesn't exist? :-D
I ( my family ) used to live next a very nice orthodox jewish family and from time to time, they would, kind of, find a way to , knock on our door and ask us to turn on or off some appliances or lights for them on the Sabbath ...

That's just plain stupid. I'm not surprised though. Christian I have several lifelong friends that are New Yorkers but I have always gravitated toward the weirdo's. - Richard Stringer

Since when is cooking for the family considered work? What's the difference between throwing a lasagna in the oven, and making a sandwich? I'm certainly all for following your religious beliefs, but I don't get this one. BW

a few years ago, i saw a 60 Minutes story about a Hospital in Israel. they showed how all the machines were set up with similar capabilities - IV drips that would adjust medication automatically, monitors that controlled IVs automatically, etc.. i'm sure a lot of that is commonplace these days, even outside Israel; but they were doing it out of necessity, not just to save money on nurses. they just couldn't start any processes (or whatever) on Sunday Saturday. Wow, that is just absurd. Anyway, how can they walk into in the elevator - isn't that working? For that matter... how can they get out of bed in the morning?

What happens if you are involved in an RTA on the sabbath? Surely they would break rules to treat you?

Really? Wow, this is more bizzare than I though! It seems odd that God® would notice that they turned a light switch on themselves but not notice them asking the neighbor to do it. :)
John Cardinal wrote: but not notice them asking the neighbor to do it. Actually, they aren't even supposed to directly ask. You have to figure it out. At least, this was my experience once when I was a guest at an event in an orthodox church (my girlfriend at the time was Jewish). The fellow kept hinting, sort of saying "gee, it's really bright in the kitchen" to me, being a heathen, since he obviously didn't care about my soul, but couldn't specifically say "go turn the light off because I have to follow these idiotic laws". I guess here the bad thing is not throwing the lasagna in the oven, but turning the oven on, hence the sabath mode of the oven... Hehe, is actually funny. Probably back in the ol`days when electrical appliances started becomming mainstream a conservative Jewish priest decided that people were getting away with "work" on Sabath-day by letting elektric machines do the work for them, so to reintroduce the spirit of Sabath they put in the rule not to activate any elektrical appliances that day. But technological progress has provided new means to obey the rule AND use your appliances at the same time.
