can an error message be any less informative? "an unknown error has occurred while accessing an unnamed file" gee, great! what a way to start an installation tech support session :(( there's only one thing I hate more than UI development and that's tech support.

I tried to get some information off Microsoft Germany today (like, licences, purchase options and stuff). Well, let's just say they could confirm my expectations about the usefulness of Microsoft Germany.

Oh, being honest with Support is the best thing you can do. I bought a MS Wireless Optical Desktop Pro in 2002. After 1 week, I spilled beer into the keyboard. I called, told them about the accident and asked if there was a way to obtain the circuit "foils", which went dead after 1 minute and before I was able to clean the keyboard. They told me that this, unfortunately, was not possible and asked for the serial. I looked it up and the support guy told me that a new keyboard was on its way, but that a) I should try and get it to work again by repainting the wirings with conductive paint b) I was not allowed to call about this very serial no. ever again c) That a new keyboard would be on its way within 2 days and d) That I was allowed to keep it, even if I managed to get the old one repaired, because I was so honest and did not try to bullshit them. (His exact words!) 4 days later I received a package with, picture this, a Wireless Optical Desktop pro, Keyboard, Mouse, Receiver and everything. And yes, I managed to repair the old keyboard. That took me 2 weeks of experimenting, though. Cheers, Sebastian -- Contra vim mortem non est medicamen in hortem.
