Next Gen Consoles
-
This isn't about new screenshots, or release information. :) Trying to get the most recent gossip about the next generation consoles I keep coming across so-called screenshots of next--gen games. I'm curious as to how anyone would think these screenshots will of the real-time quality that these pictures show. The PC market is barely getting to the point of quality that these screenshots demonstrate and that is with a $400 video card and 3 ghz CPU. I don't think Sony nor Microsoft would be so bold as to release a console that cost $1000. Ever since the integrated 3d cards for the PC, the consoles have and probably will always be behind the PC gaming. Don't get me wrong, most of the games I play are for consoles, it's just that I don't expect them to look like they do on the PC. Any thoughts? - Drew

I haven't used a console since I played with my friend's Super Nintendo Chalmers so I have no idea, but I thought this photo was classic. (One thing I can say for consoles; You plug the cartridge/CD/thingamabobin and it works. It also runs fine, a lot better than: Buy PC game. Install PC game. Delete illegal movies to make space. Install PC game. Shut down every module except kb, mouse, video and hd support. Load PC game. Download latest video-drivers. Windows crashes a few times. Download less-than-bleeding-edge video-drivers. Game loads. Game plays like a dog with no legs. Tweak game settings till it looks like 1980s Space Invaders. Game plays ok now. End of level boss is at 2% health and your mate MSNs you, EOLB kills you. Start level again. Clock game.) (Actually, HL2 I did have loads of fun with.) regards, Paul Watson South Africa PMW Photography Gary Wheeler wrote: It's people like you that keep me heading for my big debut on CNN...

To me, there're pretty much even. I've been playing Metal Gear Solid 3 on my PS2 over the last few months, it's a great looking game. But on the PC I've got games like Age of Mythology that looks equally stellar... so to me it seems the technology shared among PCs and consoles keeps them pretty even. The fact that you can't update your console hardware (as opposed to PC hardware) is offset by the console being totally optimized & geared for nothing but gaming. When it comes down to it, a console should cost more money, as modern consoles come equipped with DVD players, Audio CD players, ethernet networking, multiple input device support; it's basically a computer that looks cool and was designed for gaming. I hear MS and Sony both lose money on their consoles, the real money is in the games. And once you've bought the console, they've got you hooked on the games.

It also runs fine I look at it from this perspective, the council is for playing games and having fun. The PC / laptop is for working. I would rather not install a game that lord knows what all its installing on my development PC. My other computer is to slow for any modern games. It would be cool if I could find a way to set a console up so it can read the music off of my server and play it through the stereo. -------------------------------

You obviously didn't play many DOS games, or you wouldn't complain about these things :)

And also, the developers know exactly what hardware they're targetting, so can't leave you behind when newer, faster components come out. Also means they have to work to get fast, great looking games...finding all the little characteristics of the hardware to squeeze out the last drop of performance... Doom, Wolfenstein, Space Quest, Commander Keen and all those. 640K memory limits, using MEMDisk, rebooting in different configurations, that CD-ROM-driver-whose-name-escapes-me-right-now and on and on. Still, I expect Windows to be less of a chore, not more. regards, Paul Watson South Africa PMW Photography Gary Wheeler wrote: It's people like you that keep me heading for my big debut on CNN...
