Google Web Accelerator[^] Most of those web accelerators always sounded like a scam to me. But coming from Google, I'm tempted to try it. Has anyone tried it yet? I see dead pixels Yes, even I am blogging now!

I haven't tried Google's yet, but the "accelerators" that ISPs provide for dialup users are pretty worthless IMO. All they do is degrade the quality of pictures to make the picture files smaller. So yeah, a page may load faster but it'll look horrible. Text is already compressed before going over the modem, so the HTML won't load any faster, and non-picture files can't be changed at all, so downloading files doesn't happen any faster either. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Installed and tested the Google Web Accel at both work and at home. I work at telecom and the connection real high-speed, so I did not get any meaningful improvement with google. At home I use cable/broadband, on which the web accel is doing a good job. conclusion: Google Web Accel yields meaning results on Cable/DSL and may be Dial-up.

I read something today (can't find the link) that explained that Google was quietly following every link on the page to preload the cache. Apparently, it was wreaking havoc with the guy's web app since it was clicking on the "Permanently Delete My Account" and "Launch Thermonuclear Strike" links and ignoring any confirmation prompts
