MP3 Player recommendations for runner
-
Hey guys, I'm looking to replace my RIO600 with something that works much better when running. (The sound continually shorts out making it worse than not having anything so I don't even use it any more.) Therefore, I'm looking for a really good MP3 player that * Can be used comfortably while running * Is water resistant * Will last Also, I run about 20 miles per week. Anyone know of a good site they'd recommend for downloading audio books to listen to while I run? Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group
"So look up ahead at times to come, despair is not for us. We have a world and more to see, while this remains behind." - James N. RoweI'm VERY happy with my Nike Mp3 player[^]. It's technically by phillips. Mine is only a 256 MB model, but it's still great to work out with. I'm not sure about how water resistant it is, but since it's made for those people working out, it probably is to some extint. It doesn't have a lot of "extra features" but it plays music, and is unobtrusive while running. That's pretty much all that I look for in a workout Mp3 player though. Hope my little opinion helps. If you find something you think may be better, let me know. Brian Van Beek My Blog is Awesome, ok maybe not, but is still fun!!

Thanks much for the recommendation, Brian! I'll definitely check into this. By the way, one thing that caught my (pedantic) attention. Your name appears Dutch, but you mispelled the name of the most famous Dutch company. Just thought I'd point that out not to mess with you, but because I thought it was interesting ;P Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group

All Audible content is DRM-protected, so won't play on every MP3 player out there.

RoweTom, Have you looked at flash based player like the iPod Shuffle? They don't skip when you run, and they weigh nothing at all. Plus, it will definately work with Audible.com books, which you can purchase through iTunes. I have run and mt. biked with my daughters, after I got rid of the adolescent pop and replaced it with punk, it worked great. :) Ed Atwell

I'll have to shed my natural distaste for the "in" thing and give it an honest, objective look. Thanks Ed. Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group

"So look up ahead at times to come, despair is not for us. We have a world and more to see, while this remains behind." - James N. Rowe<wet_blanket> I hope you run on trails or sidewalks. Running on the roads with headphones is Not A Good Thing (you tend not to hear approaching vehicles). We had a woman wearing headphones in our area get hit and killed a couple of years ago while running. It was raining, and the driver tried to panic stop when he saw her and lost control. The cops claimed that if she had heard him braking, she might have had time to get out of the way. </wet_blanket>

I live in a small town and do run alongside the road so you're probably right. :sigh: I'll probably only use the mp3 player when I start using the high school track to do my training. Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group

"So look up ahead at times to come, despair is not for us. We have a world and more to see, while this remains behind." - James N. RoweI have an IRiver Flash MP3 player that I use for biking. Not sure how water-resistant it is but its great, never skips and the ability to constantly change the play list is awesome! No problems with it sucking batteries. If it wasn’t for the music, I would almost forget its there while biking. I have only dropped it a few times thus far so I can’t really vouch for its durability. One way to determine how durable a product is; is to go to best buy and look over their display units. The crappy ones are either broken or replaced very often. -------------------------------

"So look up ahead at times to come, despair is not for us. We have a world and more to see, while this remains behind." - James N. RoweIf you're running, you obviously want to get or stay in shape. And if you are that interested in strengthening your body, you definitely don't want to shortchange yourself on the potential benefits of running. You don't want a wimpy MP3 player; you should be running with a huge, heavy ghetto blaster across your shoulders. For safety's sake, start out small - a transistor radio, maybe. Then move up to a walkman-type CD player, and gradually move up to perhaps a 100 W "po' white trash" portable AV center. From there you can move on to one of those 3' long jobs that play the Tijuana Polka so loud that it makes the head of the little toy dog in the back window of your lowered '63 Chevy bounce up and down without ever nearing a railroad crossing. With time and practice you should be running nicely with a 6' Magnavox Console Stereo on your back, and be the envy of all your wimpy neighbors. Boredom, Bull$^%&, Baggage, Bar - all start with 'B'

Coincidence? You're showing your age there Rog. I don't think they call 'em "ghetto blasters" any more ;P However, the fact that I know of all the things you mentioned is precisely why I'm running - trying to get back a little of that youth, ya' know. :-D Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group

Tom, I'd second Andy's suggestion of a Rio Forge. Just bought one for my partner to use when she goes to the gym, and she loves it. The ability to add extra memory (SD or MMC cards) is nice, so you can, if you get the 512MB Forge, get up to 1.5MB. The batteries are removeable (not sure if this is that common for flash players or not), so you just need to keep a few spare AAA batteries around. It's got a radio in it too, so were you in the UK you could pick up Radio 4... Cheers, Jon
