"You need to vote for Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani," said Hasani [a representative of Iran's supreme spiritual leader]. "This way we will finally be able to have for ourselves the atomic bomb to fairly stand up to Israeli weapons," said Hasani. "Freedom, democracy and stupidities of this type cannot be carried over to any part, and these concepts are out of sync with the principles of Islam," said Hasani, the imam who led Friday prayers in the main city of western Iranian Azerbaijian. "Islam always spoke with the sword in the hand and I don't see why now we have changed attitudes and talk with the other civilisations." Link[^] Stuff like this just irritates me. What is most disturbing is the extent to which such statements fly in the face of Iran's continuing claim that they only want nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. More disturbing than that, is the extent to which most of the world seems to believe them... How can one have any faith in negotiating with someone who lies to you? Can anyone really believe that Iran seeks anything other than to buy time by negotiating? Remember that Hasani represents the real power in Iran, the 'elected' government is just a sham. Absolute faith corrupts as absolutely as absolute power Eric Hoffer The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not whether there is a god or not. Yes my gut feeling is to agree with you, but you have to remember that you in the USA have/had one great, unique advantage over everybody else: you were able to start anew 200 years ago. You had the oppourtunity - and fair dos to you, you took it - to cut yourself off from your past, and were able to forge ahead without the weight of history dragging you down, like a ship's anchor on the sea bed keeping you from moving forward. yes I agree totally that it is the world's religious leaders who are 99.9% responsible for all the shit in the world. At least most of the people who came to the New World - mostly from Europe - had shaken themselves loose from the worst excesses of these religious nutcases, and while many did still carry their religion with them, they had at least toned it down to a bearble extent for everyone else. And by the very nature of the people who made the dangerous and adventurous trip over the Atlantic, and the open and free land they were arriving in, (well, we'll leave the slave trade out of it for now - that's a separate issue; and the Native Americans) and the desire to build a new and better society than that they were coming from - you had everything going for you. You made the most of it, and the USA is undoubtably the greatest country in history. Never mind God, for all our sakes, don't blow it. Phil (in England)

My vote is for Atlantis, which was SO good that those goddamned aliens came along and transported it back to their own planet for use as a human-immersion theme park, then brainwashed most of the survivors into thinking it sank. "Hey Fred, what the hell happened to Atlantis again?" "It sank." "It sank? How could it sink? It wasn't floating on anything!" "Shut up and let's keep throwing rocks at those assholes over there who say Atlantis never existed in the first place." "I sure miss my HDTV. Atlantis ruled." - F

I don't want to hi-jack your post, but when I read the statement I thought you were talking about Bush and his religous fanatics constantly blocking the FUNDING of Stem Cell research. Then, I read the other stuffs above it.

The US is surely a great country, who achieved many laudable goals, but claiming it is the greatest of all time is IMO shortsighted, also from an historical perspective.

I think you're generalizing a bit too much. You have to take into account the living conditions in areas where the "evil" muslims are and come from. If you have to eat shit and dirt, without spoons and forks mind you!, you are susceptible to idiocy. But that's just my 2 bits. I have yet to hear about evil muslims in Sweden. The only problems I hear about are those related to cultural friction, but that's hardly specific to islam. -- An eye for an eye will only make the world blind.
