I'm about to sit down and watch the SuperBowl! :) :) American football at its best! ;) American hype at its worst! X| So do any of you "non-American types" even pay attention to this game??

You should watch Rugby instead. It had the same violence level as American Football, but without any safety gear (except a gum-shield). But I seem to remember the least argument about American Football vs. Rugby because quite frantic. I hate all sports anyway, so I don't know why i'm replying. Perhaps it's because i'm bored. Well, I'm not American, but I guess I qualify as an American-type because I live very close to them (Chihuahua, Mexico, about 200 miles south of El Paso, TX), and we are influenced by Americans in many things... I don't know if that is good or bad.... So, I'm just about to sit down in front of my TV and not move for about 3 or 4 hours... Well, I'm surprised 14-3 at the half. Patriots! I thought it would be a blow out for the Rams (not that I am much of a fan of either team.) "Thank you, thank you very much" Elvis.

Well, I'm a resident of California and at noon today (before it all started) I went paragliding and got home about an hour ago when it was all over. There were about nine of us in the air at Mt Diablo tosday. ...of not not one of us was an American ;) Steve T.

If not then American Football is a game a bit like Rugby except that you are allowed to pass forward. The aim is the same, get the ball over the end line to recieve points. There are "poles" to kick the ball through as well. Some other differences are that you can basically tackle anyone, even if they do not have the ball. There are no scrums or line outs. Also the players all wear protective gear (padding and a helmet.) One of the keys to American Football is the number of yards you run. I watched the first 2 quarters and then got too tired (1.30 am here) . I could enjoy the game but the constant cuts to commentators talking drivel , the adverts between plays and the hype just turned me cold .

That's what I always find about live "American" Football, drags on for too long and given the time it is on (here in the UK), I always get bored. I used to like it when they showed most of the game the next night, re-edited to last about 60 minutes... then it was quite fast paced. Regards, Ray

For the rest of the world that play handball with the hands and football with the feet, the European Championship final in Handball last night was amazing! Germany lead 26 to 25 when 11 seconds remained of the 2x30 minute match. Sweden had taken out the goalkeeper for an extra field player and Staffan Ohlsson used the 7 to 5 man advantage and took a shot and scored with 6 seconds to go. The Germans rush up to the middle line and throws the ball into the empty Swedish net 1 second before the end, but the referee had not started the game after the goal and it was disallowed! So, the match goes into 10 minute overtime where Sweden dominated and finally won 33 to 31 to become European champions. Now, can someone explain why americans insist on calling their rugby/handball game football, any real football player knows it is in violation to the original rules to touch the ball with their hands? :-)

I was quite shocked when the national anthem was played , I could not hear the crowd singing . Is this normal in the USA ? At rugby matches it is quite normal to have 80 000 people singing along to the national anthems . And after we got stuffed by the Irish yesterday its about the only thing we Welsh do better than most other rugby playing countries.

All other signs of increased patriotism are there*. It is always hilarious watching the lips of the Rugby players as the national anthem plays. Some have no clue while others belt it out like they live by it every day. *I heard they had to ask people to STOP hanging the Stars and Stripes from bridges leading into New York as a couple of accidents had been caused by people looking at them instead of the road. Actually, in the 1820's the lack of clarity in of that rule forced "Football" to split into Football and Rugby Football (where the ball could be handled, but only passed backwards - kicking forward was still permitted). Just to be a spanner in the works, don't forget about Gaelic Football and Aussie Rules Football too! Regards, Ray

I find it very difficult to get 'into' American football. It seems so boring especially when you compare it to rugby. Rugby doesn't allow tackling of persons who are not in possession of the ball which allows the game to flow. Rugby was a lot slower when I started playing in 1992. However, rule changes and the professional game have brought it on strides. Southern Hemisphere rugby is played with a different attitude to what we are used to in the UK. That's changing too with Ireland's resurgence... -Brian

hehe.... It's funny though how Ireland have 2 pre-match anthems... -Brian
