The results of intelligence tests in different countries show that over the past century average IQ has been increasing at a rate of about 3 points per decade [^] ...He concluded that someone who scored among the best 10% a hundred years ago, would nowadays be categorized among the 5% weakest. That means that someone who would be considered bright a century ago, should now be considered a moron! :omg: Steve

Probably shows that performance on iq tests IS related to social factors and levels of education etc. But I wonder if they really where dumb back then ? It would explain why all those old movies suck and why idiots voted for Hitler etc. Then again seems like there where more geniuses in the old days. These days sciences is a lot of small steps rather than a Newton or Archimedes stepping up to the plate and coming up with the whole theory all at once

We hear so many "small steps", but overall they are forming a stampede of knowledge. Whatever that means. BW

Today there is exponential growth in knowledge compared to back then it took several hundred years when it would maybe double. Bring someone like Newton into todays times and he would probably be a leading scientist in a specific field. Very few, if any, can get a grip on the amount of knowledge amassed today whereas during their lifetime it was quite different. ed ~"Watch your thoughts; they become your words. The average IQ is defined to be 100. There cannot be an increase in average IQ over time.  ;P
